1922
We traveled by train from New Orleans to Chicago. The moment we arrived at Chicago Union Station, the atmosphere was already different. I stepped off, taking in the sights of the new city. The wind blew through my hair, and I could hear the bustle of the streets.
"Welcome to Chicago, Vivienne." Niklaus looked at me with a playful smile.
I looked at him with a glint of excitement in my eyes and wrapped my arm around Rebekah's.
"What shall we do first?" I asked excitedly.
Rebekah laughed, linking her arm with mine. "Well, I heard there's a place called Gloria's. Apparently, the nightlife here is quite something."
Niklaus chuckled behind us. "Already making plans, sister?"
"Of course," Rebekah replied. "We didn't come all this way to sit around a hotel room."
I smiled, looking toward the bustling streets ahead of us. Chicago was unlike anything I had ever seen. There was something thrilling about it, something almost dangerous. And I had a feeling I was going to like it here.
I couldn't help but feel a little bad that Elijah wasn't with us. The only thing that kept me from feeling completely sad was knowing that Elijah had thrown off their father's scent. We should make the most of the time we had together. I knew better than anyone that our time together should never be taken for granted.
" So how do you know about this Gloria?" I asked attempting to distract myself from my thoughts.
Rebekah smiled. "Niklaus knows her. Apparently, she runs quite the interesting establishment."
Niklaus gave his sister a knowing look. "I wouldn't exactly call it an establishment."
"Whatever it is," Rebekah said, "I want to see it."
We made our way through the streets before stopping at a luxurious hotel. We walked inside and checked in at the front desk. Once we reached the top floor, Niklaus opened the door, revealing a beautiful suite overlooking the Chicago skyline.
I stepped inside, taking in the elegant furnishings and enormous windows. Chicago stretched out before us, the city lights beginning to glow as evening approached.
"Well," Rebekah said, walking past me and dropping her things onto the sofa. "I suppose Chicago isn't so bad after all."
While we all picked our rooms, I chose the one that felt most comfortable. I tried not to be picky and decided on the one with the nicest vanity. I looked at myself in the mirror, and Lestat entered my mind. A sad smile appeared on my face. I wondered what he was doing.
My thoughts were interrupted by Niklaus "Already lost in thought, love?"
I turned toward him, quickly wiping the sadness from my expression. "Just thinking."
He studied me for a moment, as if he could tell there was more to it.
"About Lestat?"
I looked away.
"You don't have to pretend with me, Vivienne."
I looked back at my reflection. "I know."
"Then stop looking so sad," he said, a small smile forming on his lips. "You're in Chicago now."
I turned toward him, raising an eyebrow. "And what exactly is so special about Chicago?"
His smile widened. "You'll see."
Before I could ask what he meant, Rebekah called from the other room. "Vivienne! Hurry up! We're going to Gloria's!"
I laughed softly, shaking my head. "Coming!"
I took one last glance at myself in the mirror before following them out.
