─────── ANTIGONE,
Sophecles

WHAT IS DUTY WHEN BLOOD AND LOVE DEMAND DIFFERENT THINGS?

Father had told her that Targaryens were divine, that fire in blood is proof of virtue and to bond with dragons is godly.

Mother had told her otherwise. Rhea Royce had never spoken of dragons with awe. To her, they were beasts with wings and flame, no more divine than the hawks that soared above Runestone. She had taught Antigone that a name did not make a person worthy, nor did blood make one good. Between them, Antigone had learned to believe in neither.

Brown of hair, violet of eyes. She was a lady of the Vale by her mother's making, a Targaryen by her father's blood, and a child of neither world entirely. For nine years she heard tales of the father she scarcely remembered. Daemon had written rarely. When he did, his letters spoke of dragons, war, and the Red Keep, as though there were nothing in the world worth knowing beyond them.

When Daemon Targaryen summons his daughter to King's Landing, Antigone arrives at court expecting a father she scarcely remembers, a grand tourney, and little else. Instead, she finds herself in the training yard with a sword in hand and Ser Gwayne Hightower on the other side.

     Duty! Duty! Duty!

A knight may swear it upon his sword, a king upon his crown, and a daughter upon her blood. But every oath demands its price, and some debts are paid in death. For when duty comes to claim what love has made its own, there is no vow that does not end in tragedy.

"You need not apologize, Ser. You challenged a stranger with your sword, and the stranger accepted. If your honour demands an apology merely because I am a woman, then perhaps it is not my honour you ought to be questioning."

"I confess, I would like to meet you again. Not upon the training yard, perhaps, and preferably without a sword between us. I fear I found you more interesting than the prospect of victory, and that is a dangerous thing for a knight to admit."
