6:48 AM - MONDAY
HARLEM, NEW YORK - ZARI'S BEDROOM
zari was completely asleep.
like, completely.
one blanket was twisted around her legs, another was halfway on the floor, and mimi was somehow sleeping diagonally across the entire bed like she paid rent.
three phones were charging near the wall.
one alarm had already gone off twice.
mimi opened one eye.
"zari."
nothing.
"zari."
still nothing.
mimi stared at her best friend for a second, then smiled.
she knew exactly what would wake her up.
she sat up and took a deep breath.
"rich amiri just called and said he wanna know why zari baptiste still sleeping."
zari's eyes flew open.
she sat straight up so fast the blanket dropped onto the floor.
mimi immediately fell backward laughing.
zari stared at her, confused, offended, and still half asleep.
"what?" zari signed.
mimi was laughing too hard to answer.
"nah, because you really woke up!"
zari grabbed her pillow and threw it.
mimi ducked.
"you childish!"
zari narrowed her eyes.
"don't joke about him."
mimi gasped dramatically. "oh, so now rich amiri got protection?"
zari rolled her eyes and pulled the blanket over her face.
mimi started laughing again.
the room was a disaster. hoodies were hanging off chairs, socks were everywhere, makeup was scattered across zari's desk, and somebody's charger had disappeared underneath a pile of clothes.
mimi looked around.
"where my charger?"
zari pointed underneath her pillow.
mimi pulled it out.
"why was it under your pillow?"
zari shrugged.
she honestly had no idea.
her phone buzzed.
she checked instagram, scrolling through notifications with sleepy eyes while mimi searched for a missing lip gloss.
the first-day-of-school nerves were there, sitting quietly underneath everything else.
zari didn't say much about them.
she didn't need to.
mimi noticed her rubbing her thumb against the edge of her phone case.
"you nervous?"
