She was walking at the park, enjoying the scenery when she accidentally trips. Falling into the arms of a stranger. She looked at her savior, her long dark hair, her mesmerizing light brown eyes, and in the lighting, she looked like a goddess.
"Are you alright?" She spoke, her voice sounding so heavenly.
Her face red as she responds, "I'm alright. Thank you."
The savior looks at the girl in her arms. Her freckles that lightly dusted her red cheeks, her blonde hair with streaks of brown in them and her eyes. Oh her beautiful hazel eyes. When she spoke, her heart filled with butterflies.
"You should be more careful next time darling." She says, helping the blonde angel back on her feet.
Her face turns red, "I will, I promise."
"What's your name cutie?" the brown haired goddess askes.
"I'm Laurel. And yours?" the blonde responds.
Taking her hand, she replies, "Maxine, but you can call me whatever you want hunny."
Maxine kisses Laurel's hand, "We should hang out sometime sweetheart."
"Oh, I'd like that a lot." Laurel responds, her face extremely red now.
Maxine smiles and says, "See you around darling." and leaves.
"See ya." Laurel replies, standing there in shock over what just happened.
She continues her walk and once she arrives home, she flops on her bed, screaming into her pillow. That girl was a goddess. She was so pretty. Maxine, that's such a beautiful name for a beautiful girl like her. Wow.
And so, she goes to bed that night thinking about Maxine, and soon falls asleep. But little did she know that a certain light brown eyed person was falling asleep, thinking about her.
As the sun shined through the small crack in Laurel's curtains, she groaned and rolled over, not wanting to get up. Eventually, she did and began to get ready for her job at the library, owned by the nicest old lady who always had cookies with her. She took a shower, and brushed through her tangled hair. Afterwards, she put on a Queen shirt and jeans and her signature round glasses. Then, she made her way to the library, thinking about that beautiful goddess she met in the park. Once entering the library, "Laurel! Darling!" Beatrice says, bringing over a plate of cookies.
"Hi Trice." Laurel says, taking one of the cookies, it was a ginger snap.
"Wow, these are amazing!" Laurel exclaims.
"Why, thank you sweetie." Trice responds.
Laurel makes her way over to the front desk and begins organizing all the books that have been brought in. Halfway through the day, Laurel begins to daydream of Maxine. Running through a field of flowers, her dark hair flowing in the wind and her laugh filling up her heart. She must've been in a daze as Beatrice smiled and nudged her saying, "Got someone special on your mind hunny?"
Her face becomes a bright red as she stutters over her words. Trice laughs and says, "Don't worry about it sugah, we all have that one person."
She gives the blonde some books and says, "These go in the fantasy and dark romance section."
Laurel nods and takes them there. As she's putting them up, she realizes that she can't reach it. She jumps up and tries to put the book up when someone comes up behind her and says, "Let me get that for you princess." and someone puts the book back.
Laurel obviously gets angry because who the hell has the right to call her that so she whips around and is face to face with Maxine. Her face becomes extremely red as she says, "Thanks Maxi."
She smirks and takes the golden haired girl's hand, kissing it, "We meet again sunshine."
The short haired girl's face becomes even more red, which she didn't think was possible.
"I'd love to hang out with you but I'm still on shift hun. Maybe later?" Laurel says with a slight frown.
Suddenly, Trice speaks up saying, "It's okay Laurel, I can hold down the fort, go hang out with your girlfriend."
"She's not my girlfriend!" She exclaims, her face very very red.
Maxine goes up to Beatrice and says, "Not yet at least."
Trice smiles and watches the two leave the library, giving Laurel a wink. Then, she goes to the back where she kept a photo of her late wife there.
"I miss you Flora." She says, tears pricking her eyes.
She then goes over to the scrolls of the past, and gasps in realization.
"They've come back. They've been reincarnated. Lia and Nova are back as Maxine and Laurel."
She smiles and says to the photo, "Our search is over my love, the world is in good hands now."
Now, with the two girls, they were walking down the sidewalks, talking and getting to know each other better. Eventually, Laurel took Maxine's hand without realizing it. Maxi smiled and continued on walking, a light blush dusting her face. The golden haired girl liked to talk using her hands, which Maxi found absolutely adorable. She smiled at Laurel, happy that Laurel was happy. She giggles and says, "Cute."
Laurel's face gets red as she notices that she had been holding hands with Maxi. Then she immediately started apologizing, "I'm so sorry, did that make you uncomfortable? I'm sorr-" Maxi cuts her off by taking her hand again, "You can't make me uncomfortable darling, and I quite like holding your hand."
Laurel smiles and skips down the street, Maxi following until they get to a cat café. The blonde's eyes lit up and immediately went inside. She was greeted with many cats rubbing their heads on her legs.
"Hello!" she says, fascinated by the cats.
The dark haired girl smiles and goes to sit down. As she does, 2 cats with the nametags "Phantom of the Opera" a black cat and "Tinsel Toes" a gray cat. They immediately cuddle up to her. She felt as if she'd known them. Maybe in a different world. She hears Laurel giggle, her laugh sounding like tinkling bells. There was a kitten sitting comfortably on her shoulder and her eyes sparkled like a child's.
"Weh, look it's, ahhhhh." Laurel says, making her usual Laurel sounds and pointing to the now asleep kitten.
Maxi giggles and nods, making Laurel very happy. A waiter comes over and asks Maxine orders a sweet tea and a chocolate chip cookie and orders Laurel a hot chocolate with pink whipped cream and two pink frosted sugar cookies. The waiter smiles and goes to prepare the order. Laurel carefully gets up so as to not wake the calico kitten on her shoulder. As she sits down, she grins widely, happy that the kitten didn't awake. Maxi looks at her, pure love and admiration in her eyes.
"Hey, love, I ordered you something." Maxi says, taking one of Laurel's hands in her own.
At that moment, the kind waiter brought the food and drinks. Maxi watches happily as Laurel's face lights up in surprise and excitement. As Maxine sips on her tea, Laurel eats her cookies. After talking for a good bit, the waiter comes up and puts the bill on the table. As the freckled blonde reaches for her money, Maxi takes the bill, pays for it, and gives the money to the waiter.
"No need to pay when I'm here darling." Maxine says while Laurel pouts.
Suddenly, the blonde gets a message from Beatrice.
"Hey Laurel, you need to get back here ASAP. And bring your lovely girlfriend with you." Laurel reads aloud with concern in her voice.
"Welp, time to get back I guess sweetheart." Maxine says, getting up.
"Yeah, I guess so." Laurel says, sounding a bit defeated.
Maxine wraps an arm around her waist, "Don't worry, we'll spend more time together later."
Laurel's face becomes red once again. The duo leave the café, Maxine promising Laurel that she'll adopt one of the cats later. As they speed walk to the Raining Library, Laurel's mind races about what all could've gone wrong. Once arriving there, the blondie basically busts down the door and runs in to find Beatrice.
"Laurel? Why are you runnin' sugah?" Trice asks, looking concerned.
Laurel, who is still worried, responds, "I thought you were in trouble and I was really worried."
"Aww, that's sweet darlin' but I'm right as rain." Trice explains.
Now Laurel and Maxine were confused.
"If you aren't in trouble, why'd you want me here asap?" the blonde asks.
Beatrice smiles, "Follow me children. It's time you know the truth."
"The truth miss?" Maxine asks.
"Now, now Maxine, no need for formalities. Just call me Trice."
This shocked the duo. They never told her Maxi's name.
"But the truth about what?" Laurel asks.
"The truth about the past, well, your past anyways." Beatrice explains, a smile on her face.
The girls looked at each other before they heard Trice say, "Follow me young ones."
They hesitantly follow her to the back of the library, where even Laurel hasn't been before. Going down a flight of stairs, Trice begins to explain, "I know both of you feel like you've been places before but you have never truly been. You know people who have claimed to have never met you in their life. And when you two met, you both felt as if you had known each other long before that moment in time. You had a deeper connection that you both couldn't explain"
The two girls were shocked. How did she know so much? What was going on? Before they had the chance to ask any questions, they reached the bottom of the stairs. Beatrice lit a lamp and began to speak in a different language, one they had never heard before. After, the wall began to move to the side, making the blonde and raven haired girls step back in shock. Once the dust cleared, it was revealed that behind the wall was a room full of scrolls and old books. The ceiling looked like rain was falling on the glass but it was sunny outside. The sound of rain echoed through the room. The three stepped inside, Laurel and Maxine gawking in surprise and amazement.
"What is this place?" Laurel asks.
"It is the Raining Library my dear, where do you think this place got its name from?"
"I never knew this existed." Laurel says breathlessly.
Beatrice gives a slight chuckle, "That's because, before you two, my late wife and I were the only ones that knew about this sacred place."
This makes the two stop in their tracks.
"Why us? We are just random average people." Maxine says.
Beatrice gives another chuckle, "No my dear. You two are far from average. You two are very, very special."
Beatrice goes over to the center of the room where a large book rests on a podium. She beckons the girls over to her. She places Laurel's hand on the right side of it and Maxine's hand on the left side. Stepping back, the book begins to glow underneath their fingertips. The girls gasp and they remove their hands as the book begins to open up to a page. Beatrice smiles.
"Read your page out loud." Trice says.
"But, how do we know which page is ours?" Laurel asks.
"You'll know." Beatrice says.
The book stops on a page and Laurel gets an overwhelming sensation to read it outloud, so she does.
"Many centuries ago, there was a ruler named Lia, the goddess of light. She was very kind and loved helping others and caring for animals. She and Nova, the goddess of dark, battled but eventually reached peace. The two married and ruled the lands. Legends say that Lia will be reincarnated in modern times with Nova and the two, if they meet, will immediately feel a connection as fate destins them as soulmates. In short, star-crossed lovers."
The book then flips to another page, which Maxine now reads aloud.
"Many centuries ago, there was a ruler named Nova, the goddess of dark. She was more quiet but cared for others. She and Lia, the goddess of light, battled but eventually reached peace. Nova proposed to Lia and the two married. Legends say that Nova will be reincarnated in modern times with Lia and the two, if they meet, will immediately feel a connection as fate destins them as soulmates. In short, star-crossed lovers."
It was silent for a moment before Beatrice said, "My late wife and I have searched for years for you. Sadly, my Flora passed from this life before we could complete this mission."
"Woah woah woah, we aren't goddesses reincarnated." Laurel says, backing away from the book.
"Yeah, there's no way we are." Maxine chimes in.
"Hmm, if that is so, how were you able to read in a language that is centuries old without ever being taught it?" Trice inquires.
The girls look back at the book and indeed, it is written in a language they had never seen before but they were able to read it perfectly.
"So, we really are..." Laurel says.
"We are soulmates!" Maxine exclaims, taking Laurel's hand.
"Maxine! We are reincarnated goddesses and all you think about is the fact that we are soulmates?!" the blonde exclaims.
Maxine laughs and spins Laurel around. Soon, the trio leaves the Raining Library and goes back to the library. Before leaving, Beatrice turns to both of them and says in a hushed tone, "You mustn't tell anyone. You will be in grave danger if you do. Continue your lives like normal. Allow the fates to run your destiny. You will do amazing things my girls. If you have any questions, you know where to find them."
The girls nod and continue leaving. Over the course of a few months, the two would go to the Raining Library and research. Eventually, Beatrice died and joined her wife in the afterlife. In her will, she had given everything she owned, including the library, to Laurel. After mourning for several weeks, the library reopened and Maxine helped her now girlfriend, Laurel run the library. They lived happily until two little girls came into the library one day. The one with short brown hair dragged the other girl with longer brown hair by the hand to Laurel.
"Um miss, can I ask you a question?" the short brunette asked.
Laurel bent down to her level, "Of course sweetie. What's your question?"
"Well, I'm Beatrice and this is Flora. Why do I feel like we've met before?"
