Prolog

More than three days after the accident, I still can't recover. I cried for hours, locked in my room, and I couldn't bear having anyone near me.

Uncle Jonathan couldn't get a flight until today, which means that in two days, I'll be leaving London. It means I'll be leaving everything behind. Three days ago, my parents were driving Lizzie to university in Birmingham when they got into a car accident. Mom and Dad were in comas for nine and seventeen hours respectively, but Lizzie died on the spot. Her heart problems killed her instantly from the shock.

Jonathan has been at the hospital ever since he arrived. I've tried to pack my things, but every time I do, I start crying at the thought that I'm alone, that the only people I had are gone, and I never even got to say goodbye.

I go downstairs into the living room, where I find Jonathan talking on the phone. "I understand. I'll try to sort out the problem as quickly as possible. Have a good day."

He turns toward me and gives me a warm, sad smile. He's been doing that ever since he arrived. He feels sorry for me. The difference between him and Dad is very small, apart from the fifteen years between them. He looks like a younger version of my father, only more polished and athletic, but in his eyes, I can't see the peace Dad used to give me. His gaze is empty. Maybe the death of his brother is the reason, but I barely know him, and for the next two years, he'll be the one I have to live with.

"I'm sorry we can't stay longer, kiddo, but tomorrow evening we have to go back to Yellow Springs." I freeze, my hand still resting on the railing even though I'm already at the bottom of the stairs. I hold myself back from breaking down in front of him. Tomorrow is my family's funeral, and he wants me to leave right after?

I turn around and hurry toward Lizzie's bedroom, and the only thing I hear behind me is a deep sigh.
