Avdol and you had been friends for many years, and you had met through your mutual friend, Joseph. You had always admired him, ever since you first met him. He always seemed to captivate you somehow, whether it be his wise words or his charming laugh. Over the years, you had grown rather accustomed to being around Avdol. His presence had become something comforting to you-a familiar voice during long conversations, a steady presence whenever things became difficult.

Perhaps that was why you hadn't realized just how obvious your feelings had become.

You were sitting beside him one evening, listening as he spoke about something Joseph had done earlier that day. His usual seriousness had been replaced by an amused smile, and you couldn't help but stare.

"You have that look again."

You blinked.

"What look?"

Avdol glanced toward you, one eyebrow raised.

"The one you get when you are thinking very hard."

You quickly looked away.

"I was just listening."

"Mm."

There was something almost knowing about the way he said it.

You glanced back at him, only to find him watching you with a faint smile.

"What?"

"Nothing."

He turned his attention back to the conversation, leaving you wondering whether you'd imagined the whole thing.

You hadn't.

Avdol had noticed.

He had noticed the way your eyes lingered on him whenever you thought he wasn't looking. He had noticed how quickly you volunteered to accompany him whenever he needed to go somewhere. He had even noticed how flustered you became whenever he complimented you.

He simply hadn't wanted to embarrass you by saying anything.

After all, your friendship meant a great deal to him.

"You've been quiet tonight," he said after a moment.

"I'm just tired."

Avdol studied you briefly before nodding.

"Then you should rest."

You smiled softly. "You're always looking after everyone, aren't you?"

"Someone has to."

"You don't have to look after me."

His expression softened.

"I know."

There was a brief silence.

Then he added, more quietly,

"But I want to."

Your heart skipped.

Avdol seemed to realize what his words might have sounded like, because he cleared his throat and looked away.

You couldn't help smiling.

Maybe you weren't as good at hiding your feelings as you'd thought.

And perhaps, judging by the small smile still lingering on Avdol's face, he didn't mind.

But, a voice of doubt still crept in, telling you that you were just being silly and that something like that just wasn't possible. You'd been struggling with self appearance (unless you had makeup on) since you were a tween, and thought that Avdol could do much better. An ache began to form in your chest, and you sighed quietly, hoping Avdol wouldn't notice. But, a voice of doubt still crept in, telling you that you were just being silly and that something like that simply wasn't possible.
