Saturday Morning
Damien
“Kuya.”
I pulled the blanket higher over my head.
“Damien.”
I didn't answer.
There was a pause.
Then three knocks landed on my bedroom door.
“Kuya, alam kong gising ka na.”
I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling.
I wasn't.
At least, that's what I wanted to believe.
Another knock.
“Kung hindi ka lalabas in five minutes, sasabihin ko kay Mom na may sakit ka.”
I sat up.
“Paolo.”
“Ah. Buhay.”
I looked toward the door.
My younger brother was standing there with one hand on the doorknob and the most irritating smile I'd seen that morning.
“What?”
“Good morning.”
“It's not.”
He laughed as he walked inside.
“It's nine-thirty.”
“Exactly.”
“Exactly what?”
“Too early.”
“It's Saturday.”
“Exactly.”
He shook his head and walked toward the curtains.
I immediately pointed at him.
“Don't.”
He ignored me.
“Paolo.”
He pulled the curtains open.
Sunlight flooded the room.
I grabbed the nearest pillow and threw it at him.
He ducked.
“Violent.”
“Close them.”
“No.”
“Close them.”
“Get up.”
I stared at him.
He stared back.
Neither of us moved.
Then he sighed dramatically.
“Okay. Fine. I'll go downstairs and tell Mom you said breakfast isn't important.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“You wouldn't.”
“Try me.”
I got out of bed.
“Happy?”
“Very.”
He smiled and walked toward the door.
“Mom said don't forget about tonight.”
I stopped.
“Tonight?”
He turned around.
“The dinner.”
I frowned.
“What dinner?”
