The Start of it All
Evangeline Whitmore sat quietly on the Hogwarts Express, watching the countryside blur past the window. It was her first time going to Hogwarts, and after wandering through several crowded compartments, she'd finally found one that was empty. She didn't know anyone yet, and for the moment, she was perfectly content with the silence.
Just as she settled into her seat with a book in her lap, the compartment door slid open.
A boy about her age peeked inside. He had warm chocolate brown eyes and tousled golden hair, a friendly smile already forming on his face.
"Do you mind if I sit here?" he asked. "The compartment I was in is getting a bit too crowded."
Evangeline looked up, momentarily caught off guard.
"No I mean, yes I mean, of course," she said, letting out a small, embarrassed laugh. "You're more than welcome to."
He smiled wider as he took the seat across from her.
"Thanks. I'm Cedric Diggory. It's my first year at Hogwarts."
A smile tugged at Evangeline's lips.
"I'm Evangeline Whitmore," she replied. "It's my first year too."
"Looks like we're figuring it out together, then."

The rest of the train ride consisted of Cedric and Evangeline getting to know each other. Throughout the journey, they were joined by another girl named Angelina Johnson. She was incredibly kind and surprisingly funny, making it feel as though they had all known each other for much longer than just a few hours.
The three of them were laughing about something Cedric had said when Angelina turned to Evangeline and asked,
"Evangeline, are your mum and dad witches and wizards?"
"My mum's a Muggle, but she said my dad was a wizard."
"What do you mean was?"
Evangeline hesitated for a moment before answering. "Well, she said there was a big fight in the wizarding world one year, and he went to fight in it but he never came back."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Angelina said softly.
"Yeah, that must be awful," Cedric added, giving Evangeline what he clearly intended to be a sympathetic puppy dog expression.
However, his attempt at looking sad was so exaggerated that Evangeline and Angelina immediately burst out laughing.
Cedric looked confused. "What? I was trying to be comforting."
"That was the least comforting face I've ever seen," Angelina said between laughs.
Evangeline smiled, realizing that despite the sad story, she felt strangely comfortable around them already.

When they arrived at Hogwarts, a witch with her hair pulled into a tight high bun stood waiting by the staircase to greet them. She introduced herself as Professor McGonagall and explained the details of the Sorting Ceremony.
As the ceremony began, Evangeline watched as Cedric was sorted into Hufflepuff. Based on everything she had learned about him so far, the house seemed like the perfect fit. His kindness, loyalty, and warm personality matched the values Hufflepuff represented.
She watched as student after student was called up until finally, she heard her own name.
"Evangeline Whitmore."
Her heart raced as she walked toward the stool and sat down. The moment the Sorting Hat was placed on her head, she heard a voice that wasn't her own echo inside her mind.
"Hmm... you're a tricky one. You possess many qualities that could each fit perfectly into one of our houses. However, there is one thing that stands out above the rest... determination like no other."
The hat paused for a moment before shouting,
"GRYFFINDOR!"
A wave of excitement rushed through Evangeline as she heard the cheers from the Gryffindor table. She smiled as she made her way over to join them, though she couldn't help but feel a small pang of disappointment that she wouldn't be sharing a house with her new friend Cedric.
That feeling quickly disappeared when Angelina's name was called and she was sorted into Gryffindor as well. Evangeline was relieved to have a familiar face beside her as she settled into her new house.
After the Sorting Ceremony ended, the students began their first feast at Hogwarts. As everyone ate and talked excitedly, two annoyingly loud voices caught Evangeline's attention. She turned toward the source of the noise and spotted two identical red-haired boys sitting together.
Twins, definitely, she thought.
She soon learned that their names were Fred and George Weasley, and that they were two of seven siblings. Throughout the rest of dinner, the twins entertained the table with their sly jokes and clever remarks. Everyone around them seemed to find them hilarious.
Evangeline, however, wasn't quite as impressed.
She couldn't deny they were funny, but something about their constant teasing and mischief made her wonder how much trouble those two could possibly cause.
