AVERY

Another day, another instance of Jameson Hawthorne doing something reckless and dangerous that he definitely shouldn't be doing.  Again, Avery thought. He's doing it again.

Avery closed her eyes, leaning into the railing of the balcony. Her hair caught in the wind.He hadn't told her where he was going, something that she'd come to expect. 

It had begun a week ago. He had left a note:

Be gone a few hours, Heiress. Don't worry.

And then, of course, since he was Jameson, a few hours had become overnight. Then thirty-six hours. Her messages to him stopped getting delivered. And then when he'd had everyone in the entire House searching for him, he'd shown up emerging from a fountain on the grounds. 

There wasn't really any discussion about it. Not really. Jameson had just hidden behind one of his trademark smirks, flipping a coin while asking, "Miss me, Heiress?"

She'd shaken it off and smiled then, catching the coin midair.

Tails.

She remembered it clearly now, watching the gates to the House closely for any sign of him. Jameson Winchester Hawthorne. Where the hell are you?

His absences had become more frequent, and he seemed constantly preoccupied, although he began coming back within thirty minutes of the times his notes listed, as he'd promised Avery after that first time.

Tonight he'd promised he'd be back by 8. It was now 11:45 pm.

And despite everything, Avery Grambs began to worry.

Worrying about Jameson Hawthorne was about as useful as kicking a vending machine. But still. Even then, her mind began to race, spinning a web of information, everything she'd noticed in the past couple of days. 

Jameson had kept revisiting one spot...
