"Ding, ding."
The bell rang as the crowd around me slowly faded until it was just me, Carlos, Max, and George.
"Time for class. Are we sure the learning part is necessary?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
"Yes, Lando, it is," Carlos replied.
"Are you sure? Because we have math," I said. "What lunch period do you guys have?"
"Second," Max and George answered together.
"First," Carlos said. "I've got to get to English now. Bye, see you after school!" He dashed away.
"Well, I've got second," I said as Charles walked past and called out,
"You guys have Mrs. Wolff for first-period math."
"Yeah!" I called back, picking up my pace to catch up with him.
"I heard there's a new boy in our class. He's Australian," Charles said.
"Cool. What dorm is he in?" I asked curiously.
"He's not staying on campus, so no one knows if the rumor's true or not," Charles replied.
"Ah, okay. How were your holidays?" I asked, changing the subject.
"They were good. I just went back to Monaco, the usual. What about you?"
"Nothing exciting. I went home for a few days, and I had a race... and won."
"Well done!" Charles shouted.
As we reached the math block, we slowed down so George and Max could catch up. They were laughing about something, but George had a hint of jealousy in his eyes whenever Max looked at Charles, as if they knew something the rest of us didn't.
As we walked into class, I leaned over to Charles.
"Is that the Aussie kid?" I asked, pointing to a boy I'd never seen before sitting in the back corner.
"Yeah, I think it is," Charles replied.
"Good morning. Take a seat, boys. There isn't a seating plan, but if even one of you misbehaves, I'll write one up on the spot," Mrs. Wolff said.
"Good morning, Mrs. Wolff," we replied in near-perfect unison, although not very enthusiastically.
