Shadow Steve

Steve Evans loved ships.

His bedroom was filled with books about famous ocean liners, pirate vessels, and old sailing ships. While other kids played sports, Steve spent his afternoons drawing maps and memorizing the names of captains.

But school was different.

The bullies laughed at his freckles, tugged at his green overalls, hid his books, and called him "Captain Crybaby." Steve never fought back. He simply picked up his glasses, dusted them off, and walked away.

One night, after another miserable day, something unusual happened.

As moonlight poured through his bedroom window, Steve's shadow peeled itself from the floor.

It stretched, smiled, and opened glowing yellow eyes.

"I'll take care of them," it whispered.

Steve never heard a thing.

The next morning the worst bully arrived at school babbling about a ghostly boy who had chased him through an endless maze made from abandoned ships. Another refused to go near water after hearing phantom foghorns all night. A third swore invisible hands had tied every shoelace in his house into impossible sailor's knots.

No one believed them.

Every night, Shadow Steve slipped from beneath Steve's bed. With a ghostly tail instead of legs and a mischievous grin, he hunted those who delighted in making others suffer. He never harmed innocent people—only the cruel.

His punishments became legendary.

One bully spent hours trapped aboard a phantom pirate ship crewed by living shadows. Another awoke floating safely in the middle of a duck pond inside a tiny toy sailboat. Each prank was terrifying, impossible to explain, and left the victim too frightened to torment anyone ever again.

Steve noticed something strange.

The bullying slowly stopped.

People stepped aside when he walked through the halls.

Some whispered that his shadow moved before he did.

One evening Steve stayed awake.

When midnight came, his shadow stepped away from the wall.

"So..." Steve said quietly. "You're real."

Shadow Steve grinned.

"I've always been here."

"You've been protecting me?"

"Someone had to."

Steve wasn't frightened.

For the first time in years, he didn't feel alone.

As the months passed, Steve and his shadow grew closer until one moonlit night they became one. The darkness flowed back into Steve's body, leaving only a faint golden glow in his eyes whenever someone nearby chose cruelty over kindness.

Now, people say that if you bully the quiet kid who carries books about ships, you might notice your own shadow smiling back at you.

And when night falls...

Your shadow may not be the one that follows you home.
