Screams of the fallen heroes echoed in the battlefield. It was loud, shattering and let the civilians watch them with a regretful look in their eyes as they couldn't do anything to lessen the pain of the heroes that fought for our safety.
My eyes filled with tears as the words from the past came floating at me.
"You could save so many people with that quirk of yours..."
"You're going to make such a good hero one day!"
Truth be told, maybe I could've become a great one if I stopped doubting myself for a second. Teleportation is such a rare quirk and yet so powerful if you train enough. Yet I chose to look down at the heroes. Calling them dumb for putting their life at risk for some cash and thinking that I was smart. Using my quirk for my own selfish desires, to go anywhere, whenever I wanted, thinking I was living my best life.
Now, looking back... it hit me. I was a coward. Scared to put myself out there, scared of a little pain even though, ironically, I was hurting myself everyday while watching every hero news, every UA sport festival and running countless scenarios in my head about how my quirk could've been used for a faster and efficient result.
On the screen a young hero crushed to the ground. I recognized him immediately. It was Katsuki Bakugo, the explosive prodigy from UA. He had a strong quirk, pretty impulsive, but also a good strategist. But now? From dominating the sport festival he was reduced to crushing onto the ground in the war zone.
Everyone fell silent. The Symbol of Peace was long out of power, pro heroes fell down one after another and too few still had the strength to get back up, as all the healing support out there was simply not enough compared to the massive disaster the LOV provoked.
Kids cried louder, the older people feared, not for themselves, but the future of the newest generation. The parents held their kids tighter to their chest, whispering soft promises of better days that they couldn't believe in anymore. And then, the guards that were responsible of us were either trying to calm down the kids or watching the screens with wide eyes.
And then it hit me. The only thing I could think of was the opening that I had. This was my chance to do something. I didn't care at that moment of the lack of experience or the trouble I could get in. The image of young people losing their life for us while I cowardly hid with a quirk that could potentially help a hero out there, ate me alive.
As soon as I made sure no eyes were on me, I used my teleportation quirk to go to the entrance of the safe zone. I closed my eyes and remembered vividly how the entrance looked like, the old pavement that no one bothered to renovate since no one anticipated that we would end up in a situation like this.
The only problem would be the limitations of my quirk. I could only teleport on an area of 200 meters and it had a 3 seconds cooldown between teleportation which would mean I could easily be caught if there were too many guards. Not like they could necessarily catch me and bring me back, but I truly don't want to cause more troubles.
Without a blink of an eye, I was standing in front of the gates and immediately made eye contact with the guard. It was an old man with a look on his face that made me understand he saw enough of this world.
He took a step towards me and with a face full of confidence I said "Don't stop me.".
He looked puzzled. It was clear he analyzed me in a second and realized that the quirk that I possessed could be a game changer if used wisely, so, with a stern look he responded harshly "Come back safely.".
I gave him a small nod and made my way towards the war zone since it happed in the very town I lived in, making it easy for me to teleport in places I knew well. As soon as I reached it, my stomach dropped as I saw everything from a new angle. It was a hard image to see. Blood everywhere, corpses, loud sounds that took all the strength I had in me to even move an inch.
Suddenly, what was happening right in front of my eyes snapped me out of it. The ash blonde boy, who I saw on the small screen, that seemed to be gone for good, got up and looked straight to the sky where the villain seemed to have won. He kept muttering something and before I could even process he was right up at him and me right beside him.
"Who the fuck are you? Get lost or die!" He said as he exploded his way towards the villain and I teleported back towards him. He looked at me and in that second and a villain attack came at him.
Without even thinking I grabbed his hand and teleported him 10 meters away and in that moment a wide grin appeared on his face.
"Do that shit again when I tell you to."
And then within seconds he asked "Can you keep up with me?"
I looked up at him with a brave look that I didn't even know I had in me and responded "Try me."
