The grand maesters write that a dragon is forged of three sacred things: the heat of the fire, the purity of spun silver, and the untamed sky. They do not write of the bitter scandal that births them, nor the brittle marrow that rots in newborn legs.
When Prince Maelyx was pulled from the womb of Rhaenyra Targaryen, he did not cry like a conqueror. He let out a wet, fragile gasp, like frost-split stone yielding to the tide.
Outside, the storm howled over the jagged cliffs of Dragonstone, but inside the birthing chamber, the midwives moved with frantic, terrified haste. Before the child's lower half could even be scrutinized by the rest of the keep, they swaddled him tightly in thick, heavy layers of Targaryen red silk. They were desperate to shield the crown princess—and themselves—from the reality of what had just slipped from her womb.
For this was the child born of the dark. Maelyx was the firstborn child of both his parents, conceived on the infamous night the Rogue Prince had slipped into the Red Keep, dragged the Realm’s Delight into the low dens of Silk Street, and shattered the peace of King Viserys’s court. Daemon had been exiled across the Narrow Sea for his crimes, leaving Rhaenyra to endure the suffocating venom of the Red Keep with a swelling belly. Viserys, driven by a mixture of fierce love for his daughter and agonizing guilt, had issued a royal decree legitimizing the unborn babe as a Targaryen prince, threatening to take the tongue of any lord who dared utter the word bastard or cripple.
But the king could not decree away the twist of the bones. And he could not stop the whispers of the Faith.
A bastard consummation, the Septons whispered in the capital, their voices dripping with righteous poison. A child born of sin, before holy vows could bind them. Throughout the Seven Kingdoms, the rumor caught like wildfire: the gods had looked upon the princess's defiance and her uncle's lawlessness, and they had cursed the boy in the womb as punishment.
The heavy oak doors of the chamber swung open. Prince Daemon Targaryen strode in, the smell of ozone and dragon-scale clinging to his dark leathers. He had defied his exile, crossing the sea the moment word reached him that the child had been born. This child was the culmination of every lawless ambition: his firstborn son. The heir he had created in the shadows of the capital before the world forced them apart.
Daemon's eyes locked entirely on the bundle. He took the infant from the midwife's trembling arms and held him. He looked at the high cheekbones, the clear Targaryen skin, and the tuft of spun-silver hair wet against the babe's forehead. There was no questioning the blood. The boy was unmistakably his.
A fierce, rare pride bloomed in the Rogue Prince's chest.
"He is perfect," Daemon declared to Rhaenyra, his voice echoing off the stone walls, a low laugh of victory escaping his lips. "Maelyx".
And thus the firstborn son was named. But that triumphant echo did not last.
In the heavy, suffocating silence of the room, Daemon's sharp eyes caught the shift. The midwives were not bowing. They were huddled in the shadows, their faces white as ash, exchanging frantic, terrified whispers. They looked not at Daemon's face, but down at the tightly wrapped swaddling clothes, their hands clutching their aprons in silent dread.
The Rogue Prince's smile died. His eyes darkened, turning cold like steel.
"What are you whispering about?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly hiss.
When no one dared answer, Daemon laid the boy on the wooden table. With a sudden, impatient jerk of his hand, he ripped away the tight silk swaddling, peeling back the layers to reveal what lay beneath.
The breath left his chest.
Maelyx's legs were not the legs of a prince. They were twisted, cruelly bent inward like the gnarled roots of a dead tree. The bones beneath the skin looked soft, fragile, and utterly misshapen, as if the fire in the womb had melted them before they could ever form. When the babe tried to move, the tiny limbs twitched uselessly, flopping against the rough wood.
A terrible, suffocating weight fell over the room. For a breathless moment, a cold, lethal darkness rose in Daemon's chest. A broken heir. A curse. The people would weaponize this, calling the boy's brittle bones the physical proof of the gods' wrath for their defilement.
The shadow of a mercy-kill lingered in his mind—a cloth over the face before the vultures could turn this tragedy into their triumph.
But as Daemon leaned over the table, his shadow falling darkly across the child, his firstborn son's eyes opened.
Daemon froze. He looked directly into the babe's eyes for the very first time, and the breath caught in his throat.
There was no fear in those eyes. None. A normal infant would have wept, terrified by the cold air and the towering, dangerous presence of the Rogue Prince. Instead, two hot coals of venom stared right back at him, unblinking and utterly defiant. Sensing the lethal threat hanging over him, the newborn babe just stared right back, his tiny chest heaving with a silent, furious will to live.
Daemon stared, transfixed. In that tiny, fierce gaze, the disgust in his chest vanished, instantly burned away by a shock of profound recognition. He didn't see a victim. He didn't see the gods' curse. He saw himself.
Locked within that shattered, fragile shell was the exact same chaotic, lawless ferocity that lived inside his own chest. Born of scandal, born of spite, the boy was a creature that refused to be conquered.
A dragon trapped in a broken cage, but a dragon nonetheless.
