'Some people believe love happens all at once.
Martin knew better. Love happened in the little things. Like remembering she hated tomatoes in her burgers.
Or knowing she'd always steal his hoodie, even if she insisted she wasn't cold. Or buying her favourite strawberry milk before she even asked because he knew she'd forgotten breakfast.

That's how they loved each other.
Quietly. Effortlessly.'

Martin glanced down at his phone.

4:16 PM

Y/N:
where are youuu 🙁

He smiled to himself before typing back.

Martin:
turn around.

She frowned at her screen before looking over her shoulder.

"There you are!"

She jogged over, almost bumping into him.

"You made me wait five whole minutes."

"I know," Martin laughed. "I'm the worst."

"You are."

She took the drink from his hand without asking.

"...You got me strawberry milk."

"You forgot breakfast."

"I told you that this morning."

"I remember."

She looked at him for a second before smiling.

"You remember everything."

"Only the important things."

Heat rushed to her cheeks.

"You're so cheesy."

"And yet you're still here."

"Barely."

"Liar."

She nudged his arm.

-

The walk home was slow. Neither of them were in a hurry.
They talked about everything and nothing.
Teachers they couldn't stand.
A movie they wanted to watch next week.
Whether pineapple belonged on pizza

Martin listened more than he spoke.
Not because he had nothing to say...

But because he liked hearing her voice.

She could talk about the most random things for hours, and somehow he'd still find himself smiling.

"You've gone quiet."

"Hm?"

"You've been staring."

"I have not."

"You have."

"I was listening."

"You were smiling."

"Am I not allowed to smile?"

"Not at me."

"Why?"

"'Cause it's embarrassing."

Martin laughed.

"I think you're cute when you're embarrassed."

"Oh my gosh, stop."

-

By the time they reached her street, the sun was beginning to set.

"I don't wanna go inside," Y/N sighed.

"So don't."

"My mum will literally kill me."

"Worth it?"

"No."

"...Maybe."

Martin grinned.

"You considered it."

"For like... two seconds."

"I'll take it."

She looked at him.

"Can I steal your hoodie?"

"You've already got three."

"And?"

"You never give them back."

"They smell like you."

"...Oh."

"What?"

"Nothing."

He looked away, trying to hide the smile threatening to appear.

"You are unbelievably adorable."

"I take it back."

"You can't."

"Watch me."

Before he could say anything else, the front door opened.

"There you are."

Both of them turned.
James stood on the doorstep, arms folded.

"I leave you alone for five minutes and you're flirting outside my house."

"We're saying goodbye," Y/N defended.

"You've been saying goodbye for twenty minutes."

Martin scratched the back of his neck.

"...Maybe twenty-five."

James sighed dramatically.

"I knew introducing you two was going to come back and bite me."

Y/N laughed.

"Jealous?"

"No."

"You sound jealous."

"I'm jealous because my best friend has officially replaced me."

Martin shrugged.

"I still like you."

"Didn't ask."

"You kind of did."

James rolled his eyes.

"Right. I'm going inside before I witness anything even more cringe."

As he disappeared back into the house, Y/N burst into laughter.
Martin looked at her. Then smiled.

If someone had asked him what forever looked like...
He would've said it looked exactly like this.
He just didn't know that forever could disappear before you even realised it was gone.
