Senior year at Northpoint High began exactly the way you expected.
With Malachi Barton being late.
────────────────────────
The student council meeting started at eight o'clock.
It was now eight twenty-three.
You stood at the front of the classroom, clipboard in hand.
Trying very hard not to lose you mind.
"Okay, so for Spirit Week we need volunteers for the charity fundraiser..."
Freya raised her hand immediately.
"I volunteer Mk."
Mk gasped.
"This is abuse."
"You started a food fight last week."
"It was one grape."
"It hit the principal."
"Allegedly."
You pinched the bridge of her nose.
Normal Northpoint behaviour.
The classroom door opened.
Late.
Loud.
Effortless.
Malachi Barton walked in carrying an iced chocolate.
Football jacket draped over one shoulder.
Expression entirely unconcerned.
You closed your eyes.
Counted to three.
Failed.
"You're twenty-three minutes late."
Malachi glances toward the clock.
"Wow."
Silence.
"Were you aiming for half an hour?"
Taylor sighed.
"And we're off."
Malachi dropped into the nearest chair.
"Good morning to you too."
"The meeting started at eight."
"And yet..."
He took a sip of his drink.
"...you survived without me."
You stare at him.
"I genuinely don't understand why you're on student council."
Malachi smiled.
The annoying kind.
"Because people like me."
"I can name at least five who don't."
"You count as all five."
Taylor looks toward Freya.
"Should we intervene?"
Freya considers it.
"No. I'm curious where this goes."
────────────────────────
The rest of the meeting somehow got worse.
Every suggestion you made...
Malachi disagrees with.
