The sound of Y/N's alarm rang loudly at 6:30 a.m.
Y/N groaned and buried her face deeper into her pillow.
Just five more minutes...
Suddenly, her bedroom door opened.
(Mom) "Y/N! Wake up! You're going to be late!"
(Y/N) "I'm up..."
She wasn't.
A few minutes later, after forcing herself out of bed, she got ready for school and headed downstairs for breakfast.
After eating, she grabbed her bag and left the house.
The morning air felt fresh against her skin as she walked toward school.
Students were already gathering near the entrance when she arrived.
Just as she reached the gates, a familiar voice called out to her.
(Jungwon) "You're cutting it close again."
Y/N turned around and smiled.
(Y/N) "Look who's talking."
Yang Jungwon stood a few steps away, hands in his pockets.
(Jungwon) "I was here before the bell."
(Y/N) "By three minutes."
(Jungwon) "It still counts."
Y/N rolled her eyes.
Jungwon laughed.
The two friends entered the school together.
It was something they did almost every day.
Ever since they became friends, walking together had become a habit.
A habit neither of them wanted to break.
As they walked toward their classroom, Jungwon suddenly spoke.
(Jungwon) "Did you finish the math homework?"
Y/N immediately looked away.
(Y/N) "Maybe."
(Jungwon) "Y/N."
(Y/N) "Maybe."
(Jungwon) "You forgot, didn't you?"
(Y/N) "...Maybe."
(Jungwon) "So that's a yes."
(Y/N) "Stop judging me."
Jungwon laughed again.
The morning classes passed by quickly.
Teachers explained lessons.
Students took notes.
Some secretly used their phones when the teachers weren't looking.
Everything felt normal.
At lunchtime, Y/N and Jungwon joined their group of friends in the cafeteria.
Everyone was talking about different things.
Exams.
Music.
Movies.
Weekend plans.
Y/N sat beside Jungwon as usual.
While listening to the conversation, she found herself looking at him.
The way he laughed.
The way he smiled.
The way he always managed to make everyone around him feel comfortable.
Suddenly, Jungwon looked directly at her.
(Jungwon) "What?"
Y/N blinked.
(Y/N) "What do you mean?"
(Jungwon) "You were staring at me."
(Y/N) "No, I wasn't."
(Jungwon) "Yes, you were."
(Y/N) "No."
(Jungwon) "You're a terrible liar."
Their friends immediately burst into laughter.
Y/N felt her cheeks warm.
(Y/N) "Shut up."
(Jungwon) "I didn't even say anything."
(Y/N) "Exactly."
The table erupted into laughter once more.
The rest of the day passed peacefully.
Soon, the final bell rang.
Students began leaving their classrooms.
As Y/N packed her belongings, she stepped into the hallway and immediately spotted Jungwon leaning against the wall.
Waiting for her.
Like always.
(Jungwon) "Ready?"
(Y/N) "Yep."
Together, they left the school.
The streets were calm.
A gentle breeze passed through the trees.
For several minutes, neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't awkward.
It never was.
Being around Jungwon was easy.
Comfortable.
Safe.
Eventually, they reached the intersection where they always went their separate ways.
(Jungwon) "See you tomorrow."
(Y/N) "See you tomorrow."
Jungwon smiled before turning around and walking away.
Y/N watched him for a few seconds before continuing toward home.
She had no idea that this year would change everything.
And neither did he .
