Before Wall Rose in the Trost District was breached, the Scouts were heading out on an exterior mission. All the soldiers made their way to the gate on horseback.

"Heads up! The main unit of the Scout Regiment is back!" a civilian shouted. Another joined in, "That's right, Commander Erwin! Did you give those ugly bastards a trashing?"

A third civilian shouted, "Look, it's Captain Levi. They say he's like an entire brigade to himself."

"Oops. Spare me, please," Levi countered.

"That scowl will crush your fans. Not that it's any of my business, but from a public relations standpoint, right, Y/n?" Hange said, looking over at Y/n.

"Yeah, Levi, you might want to lighten up a bit," Y/n stated.

They made it to the gate, waiting for it to open. "I'm on pins and needles! Can't you just envision the horrors in store for us, comrades? We're an abnormal outburst of tears and joy, aren't we, Y/n?" Hange said, trembling with excitement.

Y/n was about to reply when Levi grabbed her hair and turned her head to face him, causing Y/n to feel a bit uneasy. "Don't say another word," Levi said bluntly.

Erwin shouted, "Move out!" and all the Scouts made their way out of the wall, keeping a straight formation.

A Titan had a Scout member in its mouth, half of his body clamped between its teeth. "One day... one day you'll all just be a bad memory," the soldier wheezed. "Mankind will destroy all of you. Mark my words, the last one standing will be us!"

The Scout used his ODM blade to stab the Titan in the cheek. The Titan narrowed its eyes and bit down harder; the Scout screamed in pain, his blade still trembling in the Titan's flesh. "Gorge while you can, you bastard. Just wait until Captain Levi-"

A hook grazed the Titan's neck, anchoring into the stone wall. Levi came in at full speed, killing the Titan in one slice before landing on a nearby building. He looked around. "One on the right, two on the left."

Petra arrived along with two members of Y/n's squad. "Captain, the reinforcements are here, sir!"

Levi looked at Petra. "Good. When Y/n arrives, tell her to tend to our comrades below. Petra, you and Y/n's squad take out the Titan on your right. The pair on the left belongs to me."

Levi jumped forward and swung away. Petra shouted, "Captain, wait!"

Meanwhile, Y/n hooked her ODM gear onto the nape of a Titan, killing it instantly. She maneuvered through the air, saving an injured Scout just as Petra arrived. "Captain Levi said we should tend to the wounded," Petra called out.

"Got it, let's go," Y/n said.

Y/n and Petra made their way to the wounded for a while. Hange swung her way in with excitement, landing on a building. "Don't be scared, big guy. I won't hurt you. Cross my heart and hope to die!" The Titan swung its arm toward Hange, trying to grab her. She jumped out of the way, screaming with glee as she swerved back toward the monster. "I have points for driving, but you're slow on the uptake!"

Hange leaped off the Titan and landed on the ground, looking up at the steaming corpse. "See that? You barely felt a thing."

Levi landed on a roof, walking toward two more Titans. "I know you probably can't help it, being hideous, but I can't help being tired of looking at you." He hooked onto a building, maneuvered toward the first Titan, and killed it. He then leaped off the edge toward the second, throwing his ODM blades to blind the creature's eyes.

Levi landed on the Titan's head as it thrashed. "Uh-oh. Easy, big stuff. Nobody's got time for a crybaby." Levi took out new blades. "Let's take it like a man, shall we?"

He finished the kill and jumped to a nearby roof, looking at his hand and the blood on his blade. "Tch. Disgusting."

Y/n used her ODM gear to reach another wounded Scout, landing on the ground. "Jeez, how many are there?" She knelt down, trying to stop the bleeding. (Shit, the blood isn't stopping, she thought to herself.) She saw Levi approaching. "Levi, I-I can't stop the bleeding," Y/n said in a shaky tone.

The wounded Scout called out for Levi. Levi knelt down. "I'm here."

The soldier barely spoke above a whisper. "D-did this make a difference? Was-was I helpful? Please, sir... don't tell me this was for nothing. Tell me this advanced the cause."

Levi grabbed the soldier's blood-stained hand. "We've made great strides today, soldier, and tomorrow, because of you, your strength won't die with you. The torch will be carried on by me. This, I swear on my very life: the Titans will be eradicated."

Y/n looked at the Scout. "Levi, I-I'm sorry. He-he's-"

Levi spoke up. "It's fine. There's nothing more you could've done. You did everything you could. Did the man at least hear what I said? Any of it?"

They both looked at the Scout. "Looks like it to me," Y/n replied. "His face looks like he's at peace."

They both stood up. "Levi! Y/n!" Erwin shouted. Levi turned around. "We're pulling out," Erwin announced.

"Commander!" Levi looked at him. "What do you mean? You damn well know that we can push further. My man didn't die just to pave our retreat!"

Levi scowled. "There's a swarm of Titans moving north. They're bearing down on the city," Erwin said.

Y/n's eyes widened. "W-what?"

Levi's face turned serious. "It's just like five years ago."

"Something tells me this is going to be bad," Erwin spoke. "For all we know, the walls have already been reduced to rubble."
