The back stairwell was the only place in the school where the noise didn't reach. Yushi sat on the top step, his fingers tracing the edges of a photo he'd tucked into his notebook—a candid shot of Jaehee laughing in the courtyard. It was the only thing that kept him grounded in a school that felt too loud and too big.
"That's a dangerous habit," a voice rumbled from the landing below.
Yushi's heart skipped, but not out of fear. It was that strange, heavy thrum that only happened when Sion was near.
Sion didn't climb the stairs like a normal student; he moved with a slow, effortless confidence that made the space around him feel small. He stopped two steps below Yushi, putting them at eye level. To the rest of the school, Sion was the guy you didn't cross, the one with the cold stare and the reputation for trouble.
But as he looked at Yushi, his expression softened just a fraction. He reached out, his thumb brushing against the corner of Yushi's notebook, close enough to feel the heat radiating from Yushi's skin.
"You're too transparent, Yushi," Sion murmured, his voice low and surprisingly gentle. "You keep looking at him like he's the only person in the room. You're going to get yourself hurt."
Yushi gripped the notebook tighter. "It's none of your business, Sion."
Sion let out a short, breathy laugh and stepped up until their knees brushed. He didn't tower over him to be mean; he just took up all the space until Yushi couldn't look anywhere else.
"I'm making it my business," Sion said, his gaze dropping to the photo one last time before locking back onto Yushi's eyes. "Because while you're busy watching him... I'm the one making sure nobody else is watching you."
He reached up, tucked a loose strand of hair behind Yushi's ear, and turned to walk away.
"Be careful," Sion added over his shoulder. "I won't always be this patient."
