The fog swallowed the road like a living thing.
The man barely had time to register the movement before the "injured" woman was already gone.
A blur.
A snap of cold air.
Then-
Pain.
His breath caught as her hand locked around his throat with inhuman force, lifting him off balance as if he weighed nothing at all. His eyes widened, searching her face for something human, something real.
What he saw instead was wrong.
Her eyes had changed-bright, predatory, utterly awake.
"You should've kept driving," she whispered.
Before he could speak, she struck.
Fangs sank into his neck with brutal precision.
His body went rigid, hands clawing weakly at her arm as warmth drained out of him in pulses that slowed... slowed... and then stopped mattering at all.
The world tilted.
And then she let him drop like he was nothing.
Behind her, the woman who had been in the passenger seat stumbled backward, horror ripping through her throat in a scream that barely made it into the fog.
"Help-! Someone-!"
But there was no one.
Only empty road.
Only silence.
And the vampire turned her head slowly.
Not rushing.
Not panicking.
Smiling.
"You ran," she said softly, almost disappointed. "That's always the worst choice."
The woman bolted.
Feet pounding against wet asphalt, breath breaking apart in terror as she ran blindly into the dark.
But the fog shifted.
And something moved with it.
Faster than sight. Faster than thought.
One second she was alone.
The next, a hand gripped her shoulder and spun her around.
She barely had time to cry out before the vampire was there-too close, too calm, too inevitable.
"No-please-!"
The scream was cut short as fangs sank in.
The sound of the night returned as if nothing had ever disturbed it.
Only the fog remained... thick, patient, and silent.
The first thing she notices is how normal everything looks.
Morning light spills over the town like nothing ever happened here. Like nothing ever could happen here.
But Y/N Salvatore knows better.
She slows the car as she crosses the town line, fingers tightening slightly on the steering wheel. The road sign passes in a blur-Mystic Falls-and something in her chest tightens in response. Not pain. Not quite.
Memory.
She glances up through the windshield.
Same trees.
Same streets.
Same quiet that always used to feel like a lie.
In the rearview mirror, she catches her own reflection.
