In the grand and overly serious imperial palace, where ministers feared breathing too loudly,
Emperor Wei Wuxian was… a problem.
He laughed too loudly.
He skipped court meetings.
And once, he replaced the official tea with wine just to “make politics more interesting.”
“Your Majesty!” the ministers cried.
“Relax,” Wei Wuxian grinned, lounging on the throne. “If the empire collapses, we’ll just build it again. Maybe prettier this time.”
No one found that funny.
Except, perhaps, one person.
Prince Lan Wangji of the Lan Clan had just arrived for a diplomatic visit. Calm, elegant, and so composed that even the wind seemed to avoid disturbing him, he was the complete opposite of the emperor.
Their first meeting was… memorable.
Wei Wuxian was hiding behind a pillar, trying to escape a boring meeting, when Lan Wangji walked past.
Their eyes met.
Lan Wangji blinked once. “Your Majesty… why are you behind a pillar?”
Wei Wuxian smiled brightly. “Ah, excellent question. I am conducting… imperial surveillance.”
“…Behind a pillar?”
“Yes. Very strategic.”
Lan Wangji stared at him in silence for a long moment… then,
unexpectedly, turned and stood beside him.
“Then I will assist Your Majesty.”
Wei Wuxian almost laughed out loud.
From that day on, the palace became a little less serious.
Wei Wuxian dragged Lan Wangji into all kinds of nonsense.
“Come on, Lan Zhan! Let’s skip court!”
“No.”
“We’ll just briefly skip it.”
“…No.”
“Fine. Then let’s at least replace the minister’s speech scroll with a love poem.”
“…Absolutely not.”
(They did it anyway.)
One evening, during a grand banquet, Wei Wuxian leaned over.
“You know, Lan Zhan,” he whispered, “everyone here is afraid of me.”
“They should respect Your Majesty.”
“Hmm… but you’re not afraid.”
Lan Wangji looked at him calmly. “There is no reason to be.”
Wei Wuxian tilted his head, smiling softer this time. “And what if I say I might do something reckless right now?”
Lan Wangji didn’t even hesitate.
“Then I will stop you.”
“Oh?” Wei Wuxian leaned closer. “How?”
Lan Wangji gently took his wrist under the table.
Wei Wuxian froze.
“Like this,” Lan Wangji said quietly.
For once, the emperor had nothing clever to say.
The palace servants soon noticed strange things.
The emperor attended meetings more often.
He smiled more… but caused slightly less chaos.
And Prince Lan Wangji was always nearby—calm, composed… and somehow in control.
One day, a minister whispered, “Your Majesty has changed.”
Another replied, “Yes… but somehow, it’s even more dangerous.”
Late at night, Wei Wuxian sat on the palace roof, watching the stars.
Lan Wangji joined him, as he always did.
“You know,” Wei Wuxian said, “being emperor is boring.”
Lan Wangji glanced at him. “Then do not be boring.”
Wei Wuxian laughed. “With you around, I don’t think I can be.”
A quiet moment passed.
Then he added softly, “Stay here, Lan Zhan.”
Lan Wangji didn’t ask what he meant.
“I will.”
And so, the empire remained peaceful…
Mostly.
Because while Emperor Wei Wuxian still caused trouble,
Prince Lan Wangji was always there—
to stop him,
to calm him,
and, most dangerously of all…
to love him.
