The morning sun shone gently through the tall hospital windows. Catherine, Princess of Wales lay on the bed, her hand resting on her round belly. She took deep breaths, trying to stay calm, but her jaw was tight, showing she was nervous. William held her other hand, rubbing small circles on her knuckles.
"This is it," Catherine whispered, her voice soft. Her eyes were wide with a mix of excitement and worry.
William smiled. "It is. And we'll be fine. You've done amazing so far."
Catherine managed a small smile. "I hope so. It feels like... a huge responsibility."
William leaned closer. "The biggest responsibility either of us will ever have."
Outside the room, the world was already buzzing. Photographers lined the hospital entrance, fans waited behind barriers, and the media speculated about every detail. But inside, none of that mattered. Here, it was just Catherine, William, and the life that was about to arrive.
The contractions came steadily. Catherine gripped William's hand tightly, letting his calm presence guide her. Nurses and midwives moved around, quietly giving instructions, encouraging her, and making sure everything went smoothly.
Hours passed. Each contraction felt harder than the last, but William stayed right there, whispering encouragement. He brushed damp hair from her face, held her hand tightly, and reminded her to keep going.
And then, finally, it happened.
A cry—a small, high-pitched cry at first—echoed through the room. It grew stronger, louder, more determined.
"She's here," the nurse said softly, placing the tiny baby on Catherine's chest.
Catherine gasped, tears forming in her eyes. She looked down at the tiny, wriggling baby. "Estelle Victoria Catherine," she whispered, brushing her fingers over the baby's tiny hands and feet. "Welcome to the world, my love."
William bent down and kissed the top of her head. "Our princess," he said, voice thick with emotion. "Our little queen-in-waiting."
The baby's crying slowed as she snuggled against her mother's chest. Catherine held her close, feeling the warmth of her little body, the soft flutter of her tiny hands, the delicate movement of her eyelashes.
"She'll be first," Catherine whispered quietly. "The first of the Wales family to inherit everything one day."
William nodded. "And she'll be strong. Graceful. We'll make sure of it."
The nurses helped Catherine recover, cleaned and swaddled the baby, and showed them how to care for her. William stayed close, holding the baby, helping Catherine, and soaking in every little detail—the tiny yawn, the first stretch of her legs, the little coos that made them both laugh.
By afternoon, it was time. The hospital staff helped Catherine sit up, and William wrapped a warm blanket around Estelle. They were ready to meet the waiting world.
Outside, the cameras flashed endlessly. Reporters shouted their questions, though no one expected answers. Fans waved flowers and cards, hoping for a glimpse of the new princess. Catherine leaned back slightly in her chair, holding Estelle close, while William guided them both carefully to the doors.
The sunlight hit them as they stepped outside. A hush fell over the crowd, broken only by the constant click of cameras. William's arm circled Catherine's shoulders gently, while the other hand rested lightly on the tiny bundle in her arms. Catherine smiled, waving softly at the crowd as Estelle stirred against her chest.
"Look at her, William," Catherine whispered quietly. "She's already so brave."
William smiled, glancing down at his daughter. "Brave and perfect. Our firstborn princess."
They paused for a few moments while photographers snapped photos from every angle. Estelle yawned and stretched her tiny hands, as if waving to the world. Catherine laughed softly, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead. "She's stealing all the attention already," she said.
"She deserves it," William replied, smiling. "She's going to do great things."
Finally, it was time to go. A waiting car had been prepared, its doors open and ready. William held the door for Catherine, and she carefully settled herself into the back seat. Estelle lay against her chest, bundled in a soft blanket, her little face peeking out.
William followed, closing the door gently behind them. For a moment, all three of them sat quietly together, letting the reality of the day sink in. The world outside was noisy and bright, but inside the car, it was warm and still.
As the engine started and the car began to move, Catherine brushed her fingers over Estelle's tiny hand. "Welcome home, my little princess," she whispered.
William reached over and held her hand, looking down at their daughter with a mixture of pride and awe. "This is just the beginning," he said softly. "The beginning of everything."
And with that, the Wales family drove off, leaving the hospital behind, ready to start the next chapter of their lives together.
The first cry had been heard, the world had seen their princess, and the future of the Wales family had begun in earnest.
