The house was too quiet.
Not the peaceful kind of quiet
The kind that pressed in on your ears, heavy and suffocating-like something was missing .
Elowen Brooks felt it the moment the door opened.
"Come in"
The voice was deep. Flat. Controlled.
She stepped inside anyway, clutching her bag a little tighter as her eyes adjusted to the space.
Everything was... pristine.
White marble floors. Dark accents. Floor to ceiling windows that let in a grey, overcast light. It looked expensive - untouchable

Her boots sounded too loud against the floor as she walked further in, heart tapping.
"Sorry-hi-I'm Ellie. Well, Elowen, but most people call me Ellie, I just- yeah".
She winced at herself.
Great start
Silence.
Then -
"You talk a lot"
She looked up.
And-
Oh.
That must be him.
Cassian Hale stood near the far end of the room, sleeves rolled just enough to reveal onk along his forearm. Dark. Sharp. Intentional.
He didn't move toward her.
Didn't smile.
Didn't soften.
He just.... watched.
Assessing.
Like she was a problem he hadn't decided how to solve yet.
Ellie swallowed, then gave a small, sheepish smile.
"Only when I'm nervous"
"I can tell"
Blunt.
Of course he was.
She shifted her weight, glancing around again before her eyes landed back on him- and stayed there a second too long.
He was... intense.
Not just attractive-through he was, in that unfair, sharp-edged way-but intimidating.
Liked he carried something heavy behind his eyes.
Something locked down tight.
Her gaze flicked just briefly to his arm.
To the tattoo
Clean lines. Broken shapes. Structured chaos.
Interesting.
"Do you always stare at people like that?" he asked.
Her eyes snapped back to his.
"Sorry! no-i just-your tattoo, it's- um-"
She stopped herself/
Stop talking, Ellie.
His expression didn't change.
"Unprofessional",
"Ouch", she muttered softly, then straightened. "Right. Sorry. I can be professional".
"Good".
Another beat of silence.
