The morning sun spilled across the Evans driveway, catching the edges of backpacks, sneakers, and the unmistakable energy of a first day.

Jenny stood beside the car, sixteen now, tall and confident, her hair pulled into a loose braid. She tapped her foot impatiently while watching her little sisters argue over who got to hold the sparkly unicorn lunchbox.

Jordan insisted it was her turn.
Josephine insisted she had the better grip.
Both were five. Both were stubborn. Both were thriving.

Jenny smiled, reading their lips easily. "Girls," she said, her voice warm and clear, "you're going to be late for kindergarten if you keep fighting over a unicorn."

Jordan gasped. "But it's MY unicorn."

Jo crossed her arms. "Mom said we share."

Jenny crouched down, signing and speaking at the same time — something she'd mastered over the years. "Then share today. Fight tomorrow."

The twins giggled, crisis forgotten.

Jason stepped out of the house next, taller than Chris now, his hair a little too long and his smile a little too soft whenever Milo's name came up. He slung his backpack over one shoulder and nudged Jenny.

"You ready for junior year?" he asked.

Jenny smirked. "Are you?"

Jason groaned. "Absolutely not."

From the porch, Chris locked the door and jogged down the steps, wearing his school ID badge — Mr. Evans, Be Kind Program Coordinator. The title still made him proud.

"Alright, troops," he called. "Let's move out. First day waits for no one."

Kelly followed behind him, one hand on her coffee, the other smoothing Jo's hair. "I can't believe we're doing kindergarten again."

Chris grinned. "At least this time we know what we're doing."

Kelly raised an eyebrow. "Do we?"

"Absolutely not," he admitted.

Jenny laughed, the sound warm and easy. She could say so many words now — not perfectly, not always smoothly, but beautifully. She'd worked for every single one.

And she was proud of them.

A New Season Begins

As they piled into the car, Jenny glanced out the window, watching the neighborhood roll by. She felt older. Stronger. Ready.

She had friends now. A life. A boy she'd been texting all summer — a boy who made her smile in a way she wasn't ready to tell her parents about yet.

Jason sat beside her, scrolling through his phone, cheeks pink as he typed a message to Milo. Their friendship had deepened into something quieter, something tender, something neither of them had named out loud yet.

And in the backseat, Jordan and Josephine sang the alphabet song loudly and off‑key, kicking their feet in excitement.

The Evans family wasn't perfect.

But they were whole.
Growing.
Changing.
Stepping into something new.

At the School

Chris parked the car and turned around, looking at all four of his kids — two teenagers, two kindergarteners, all of them pieces of his heart.

"Okay," he said, "new year, new adventures. Be kind. Be brave. And don't make me come find you unless it's an emergency."

Jason snorted. "Define emergency."

"Jason," Kelly warned.

Jenny signed Dad means behave, and Jason rolled his eyes.

The twins hopped out first, grabbing each other's hands as they ran toward the kindergarten doors.

Jason followed, spotting Milo across the courtyard and pretending not to smile.

Jenny lingered for a moment, adjusting her backpack strap.

Kelly touched her arm. "You okay?"

Jenny nodded. "Yeah. I'm... excited."

Chris kissed the top of her head. "Go show the world who you are."

Jenny smiled — confident, steady, ready — and walked toward the school.

A New Chapter for the Evans Family

Chris slipped an arm around Kelly's waist as they watched their children disappear into the building.

"Think they'll be okay?" Kelly asked.

Chris smiled. "They're Evans kids. They'll be more than okay."

Kelly leaned into him. "Feels like the start of something big."

"It is," Chris said. "For all of us."

And as the school doors closed behind their children, the Evans family stepped into a brand‑new chapter — one filled with first loves, new friendships, growing pains, and the kind of moments that shape a family forever.
