The gray London sky pressed low over St Mary's Hospital, muted and soft, as if the clouds themselves were holding their breath. Outside, a crowd of hundreds had gathered behind temporary barriers. Microphones bobbed on poles. Cameras flashed. Reporters leaned forward, calling names, murmuring into earpieces, as if their voices alone could summon news.
And then, the royal doors opened.
Catherine, Princess of Wales emerged first, bathed in soft light, the tiny bundle in her arms. Beside her, Prince William walked slowly, hand at the small of her back, eyes flicking constantly between Kate and the newborn, his jaw tight with nerves.
The crowd erupted into flashes and cheers.
Kate's gaze never wavered from the baby. The tiny girl's first cries had long since quieted, her face now peeking from the blanket with sleepy, curious eyes.
William crouched slightly to whisper in her ear. "She's... perfect."
Kate smiled, adjusting the blanket around their daughter. "She is. And she's ours."
A hush fell over the crowd as King Charles III emerged from the palace gates, flanked by aides. Cameras swung toward him. Reporters murmured in anticipation.
The King, standing tall in a dark coat, held a small, crisp piece of paper. His voice carried across the courtyard, calm and deliberate.
"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter this morning. Both mother and child are in excellent health. The Duke of Cambridge was present at the birth. The baby's name is..."
He paused, a slight smile tugging at his lips, and the cameras caught every eye flick to Kate.
"Her Royal Highness Princess Cambrie Elizabeth Catherine of Cambridge."
The crowd erupted in cheers. Photographers snapped relentlessly, flashes lighting up the gray winter sky. Flags fluttered, and the murmurs of excitement rippled through the assembled journalists and well-wishers.
William bent slightly over Kate and the baby, whispering, "Princess Cambrie Elizabeth Catherine... that's a mouthful."
Kate laughed softly, brushing a strand of hair from the baby's face. "A mouthful and perfect."
Cambrie stirred in Kate's arms, her tiny hand curling instinctively into the fabric of her mother's coat. She was quiet now, eyes half-closed, but already seeming to understand: the world was watching. And she had her mummy to keep her safe.
The King stepped back, nodding once at William and Kate before moving aside. "The nation welcomes her," he said simply, and the statement was repeated in every press outlet almost immediately.
Cambrie let out a soft coo, gripping Kate's hand with surprising strength for a newborn.
"Already a mummy's girl," William murmured, smiling through the fatigue.
Kate pressed a gentle kiss to her daughter's forehead. "And she always will be."
As the family posed for the cameras, the crowd outside cheered again, their voices blending with the distant chime of church bells. William looked down at Cambrie, still bundled in her soft blanket. His chest tightened—not with jealousy, exactly, but with awe.
Because in that moment, it was clear: she was the center of their world.
And as flashes of light lit the winter sky, Kate whispered softly to her daughter, "Welcome to the world, Princess Cambrie Elizabeth Catherine. You're already loved beyond measure."
Cambrie stirred again, tiny fingers curling, as if to remind everyone: she might be small, but already, she had a presence no one could ignore.
And in front of the world, the future princess had made her first impression: confident, calm, and already devoted entirely to her mummy.
