The rain poured heavily that night.
It was the kind of rain that felt like it carried sorrow with every drop.
Ariana Velasquez stood alone on the sidewalk, completely drenched.
Her clothes clung to her fragile body as if even they refused to let go.
She didn't move.
She didn't cry.
She just stood there, staring blankly into the darkness ahead.
Cars passed by, splashing water against her legs.
No one stopped.
No one cared.
Ariana hugged herself tightly.
The cold wind brushed against her skin, but it wasn't what made her shiver.
It was the emptiness inside her chest.
"Why does it still hurt?" she whispered to herself.
Her voice was barely audible under the sound of the rain.
But the pain in it was loud enough to break anyone's heart.
She had nowhere to go.
No one to run to.
No one waiting for her.
And maybe that was the worst part.
Suddenly, a black car stopped in front of her.
Its engine hummed softly like a warning.
Ariana didn't look up at first.
She thought it was just another car passing by.
But the door opened.
A tall man stepped out, holding an umbrella.
His presence felt... different.
Cold.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
"Are you planning to die out here?" the man asked bluntly.
Ariana slowly lifted her gaze.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, the world seemed to pause.
His eyes were sharp and unreadable.
Hers were tired and full of silent pain.
"I'm not dying," Ariana replied softly.
"Then what are you doing?" he asked again.
"Existing."
The man frowned slightly.
That answer wasn't what he expected.
He stepped closer to her, holding the umbrella over her head.
But Ariana didn't seem grateful.
"I don't need help," she said.
"Clearly, you do," he answered coldly.
Ariana let out a small, bitter laugh.
"You don't even know me."
"I don't need to," he replied.
Silence fell between them again.
The rain continued to fall around them.
"I'm Lucas Monteverde," he said finally.
Ariana didn't respond.
Names didn't matter to her anymore.
"Get in the car," Lucas added.
"No."
His jaw tightened.
"You'll get sick."
"I don't care."
Lucas stared at her, irritation flashing in his eyes.
"Do you enjoy making your life miserable?"
Ariana looked at him again.
"No," she said quietly.
"It just happens."
Something about her answer made Lucas pause.
He wasn't used to people talking like that.
He wasn't used to people who looked so... broken.
"Fine," he muttered.
"Stay here and freeze."
He turned around and walked back to his car.
But before he could close the door, Ariana spoke.
"Why did you stop?"
Lucas froze for a second.
Then he looked back at her.
"I don't know," he admitted.
And for the first time that night, Ariana felt something shift inside her chest.
Not warmth.
Not comfort.
But something... unfamiliar.
Lucas sighed and ran a hand through his wet hair.
"Last chance," he said.
Ariana hesitated.
She didn't trust him.
She didn't trust anyone.
But she was tired.
So tired.
Slowly, she walked toward the car.
Lucas opened the door for her without saying a word.
Ariana got in.
And just like that...
Two broken souls began a story they never expected.
Neither of them knew it yet.
But that rainy night would change everything.
