Summer of 1989, Kimiyo College.
Dear Diary,
Today was orientation day for Kimiyo College, probably one of the most prestigious institutions in Japan. Not my first choice, but it was close enough to Buraza town, so I wouldn't have to go too far away from home. Grandmother and grandfather still needed help around the house with their increasing age, and I still needed to take my little sister to school. It was a convenient decision, though I wish it was a little farther away so I wouldn't have to see my mother every day.
Mother had always been a vain, narcissistic woman. She only cares about herself, really. My grandparents raised me for the most part, and it felt more normal being around them than being with my parents. I don't know how my dad can stand to be married to her for 22 years as of yesterday, but then again, he doesn't think much anyway. If it wasn't for my grandparents or my sister, I would've taken the first bus out of this place to somewhere nicer. Maybe somewhere I could find the love of my life. That'd be nice.
Well, I kind of did. Today, I met a really nice guy who showed me around campus! His name was Ryusei, an incoming 3rd year literature major. He was tall, a little older, and looked like a punk. Or was it those "visual kei" bandmen that started popping up lately? I can't remember, but he was cool. There've been hundreds of guys in my life, but I never really paid as much attention as I did to Ryusei. Something about him made me feel alive inside, like my problems didn't need to matter as much when I'm with him! I'm not the type of girl to believe in love at first sight, but Ryusei will be my one and only. I'm sure of it!
But then again, Ryusei's pretty popular with all the underclassmen girls, so I'm not too sure what I'd do about that. My witch of a mother says I should just "kidnap him" and "force him to obey me," but she sounds insane. I know for sure I don't want to be in a marriage like my parents. I can't imagine having to wake up to a zombie every day.
One thing I also know is that my target is locked on one girl - Akemi. Selfish, stuck up, the whole nine yards, but puts on this front of being shy and fragile. It was pathetic to watch her keep up that lie in College as an adult, but whatever, it's her life.Akemi was always violent, too. She was a terrible bully in secondary school, which is why she had no friends. She, however, uses that to act all meek and docile to people who just met her today. Blegh. It's disgusting that she'd change herself up for a guy, honestly. If only Ryusei knew.
Luckily, I scored Ryusei's landline number, so I'll see where I can get with him before the summer ends! Maybe then I won't have to worry so much about Akemi. Speaking of which, I have a date to the movies! We're just hanging out, but I should probably get all dolled up, right?
Signed,
- Misaki Kikusawa
