Chapter 1: The New Phenex

Bright’s POV:

I stared out the carriage window as the forests rushed past, the trees blurring together under the speed of the galloping horses. The road twisted through the vast lands that supposedly belonged to the Phenex family, leading toward their estate.

Not that I had chosen any of this.

What exactly was I supposed to do when several men dressed like medieval knights appeared outside my house? Knights with spears… and bat-like wings.

Fighting them would have been suicide. Running would have been pointless.

So I did the only logical thing.

I followed them.

I let out a quiet sigh, resting my head against the carriage wall.

To their credit, the leader of the Phenex knights had at least tried to explain the situation. Apparently, I had been selected as a candidate to become the next heir of the Phenex family.

Even though I was human.

Even though the position would be… adopted.

Refusing had technically been presented as an option.

But the way the knights had surrounded my home made one thing very clear.

Refusal probably meant execution.

So I simply nodded… and got into the carriage.

Ravel POV

As I looked out from the mansion window and watched the carriage arrive, carrying my new adopted older brother, I felt a flicker of irritation.

Part of me was still annoyed that I had not been chosen instead.

Even if I was technically too young.

But that feeling quickly faded, replaced by something far more comforting.

Relief.

Because the truth was… my brother Riser Phenex was a lot to deal with. And not in a good way.

His ego was the size of the entire Underworld.

His intelligence, unfortunately, was not.

More than once, the thought had crossed my mind to remove him from the line of succession myself. Or at the very least convince him to step down and pass the title to me.

Now that same enormous man-child refused to leave his room, only sending the maids away with orders for food.

Pathetic.

I let out a quiet sigh… before a small smile formed on my lips.

Perhaps this situation was not so bad after all.

With this new brother not being related by blood, my standing in the family would remain higher than his, even if I was younger.

Which meant something very important.

I could shape him.

Mold him into the perfect older brother — one worthy of carrying the Phenex name, someone who would restore the dignity my original brother had so thoroughly damaged.

And when I was finally old enough…

I would simply have him hand the title of heir to me.

Peacefully, if possible.

And if not…

Well.

There were always other methods.
