Pretty Little Things

We walked in the dark [PROLOGUE]

It hurt, it always has hurt. It's what I was made for, a mistake treated as such.

A sharp ring went through the air. I flinched and I clamped my hands to my ears, hoping to make it stop. Could you even call this a bell?
My nails dug into the side of my head, before suddenly my wrist was grabbed and I was yanked down the hall.
I stumbled along as my knees buckled, my ears still ringing from earlier.
I whimpered as I was yanked up right again. "Stay upright, kid." I looked up, the man in front of me looked the same as everyone, white coat with goggles blocking my view of their eyes. I nodded and got a tight smile in return, sympathy.
I was led down the hall, my pale green skin stark against the white walls. The dull buzzing in my head made the world spin. The buzzing, a subtle reminder how I would never be able to be a part of the community.
I was quickly shoved, or thrown I guess, into another room. The walls were the same as many, just a blank white.
A voice came over the intercom. "May 6, 2014."
I sat up sitting on my knees, hands on the ground either side of me. I looked up to the red light in the corner of the room, where I assumed where the intercom was. "We're going to need you presentable today,"  I tilted my head. "Please comply."
Suddenly everything went black.

My hands tangled in another's, our foreheads pressed together. A mess of every color and stark black.
I didn't know pitch black could be so pretty.
It felt like a dream,
because it was.
It always was.
At least for now.

"NO,"
Move, move, please move.
I stood frozen, my only friend being dragged away.
Why couldn't I move? Why didn't I move? 
If I move I'll either be shot or just dragged away the same as her, but I don't want her to leave me.
My knees buckled beneath me. I hit the ground with a soft thud. I looked up with tears in my eyes as my best friend was launched into the sky like a rocket, in a rocket. I never saw her again.
