Y/n Pov:

I was sitting beside my best friend, Y/F/N, in our English class while Mrs Thompson rambled on at the front of the room. She had been talking for what felt like forever about the group assignment we were starting next week.

"The assignment is about Greek Mythology themes that we've been studying over the past month", Mrs Thompson said, turning to the whiteboard and writing as she spoke.

"The themes include:

- The transformation of the Hero's journey,

- The dangers of pride and arrogance

- The selfishness of the gods

- And Love and lust."

The squeak of the marker echoed around the quiet classroom.

I was busy writing the themes down in my notebook when suddenly I felt a sharp kick against the back of my chair.

I turned around slightly and looked over my shoulder.

Jake was sitting behind me, leaning back in his chair with a smug little smirk on his face, like he was proud of himself for getting my attention.

"What?" I whispered, trying not to be obvious while Mrs Thompson continued explaining the assignment to the rest of the class.

Jake leaned forward, resting his arms on the back of my chair so he was closer to me than before.

"Want to be in a group with Max and me?" he murmured. "You can ask Y/F/N to join too if you want."

His eyes flicked toward the front of the classroom to make sure Mrs Thompson wasn't watching us.

My Stomach did a small, annoying flip.

Jake and I had always had this... thing. Not exactly friends, not exactly enemies. more like constant teasing, lingering looks, and moments that felt a little too intense for just classmates.

"You're only asking because you want someone else to do the work", I whispered back, raising an eyebrow.

Jake's smirk widened.

"Ouch," he whispered dramatically, placing a hand over his chest. "That hurts, Y/n. I thought we had something special."

I rolled my eyes, but I could feel my cheeks warming.

Before I could respond, Y/F/N leaned slightly toward me.

"What are you two whispering about?" She muttered.

"Group Assignment," I whispered back.

Her eyes flicked over my shoulder to Jake, and a small grin appeared on her face.

"Oh," she said, knowingly drawing the word out.

I nudged her elbow with mine

"It's not like that"

From behind me, Jake let out a quiet laugh.

"Pretty sure it is."

I turned back to glare at him, but the look faltered slightly when I realised how close he was. He hadn't leaned back again. Instead, he was still resting his arms on the back of my chair, his face only a short distance from mine.
