The forest pressed down on Yuki Cross like a living weight, the moonlight struggling through a dense canopy of skeletal branches that seemed to reach for her, clawing and grasping at the night. Every rustle of leaves, every whisper of wind, made her jump, her heart hammering, each beat a frantic echo in the hollow stillness. She gripped the Artemis Rod with trembling hands, the metal cold and unfamiliar against her palms, the joint of it clicking softly as if impatient, waiting for her to act. The soft crunch of leaves beneath her boots rang louder than it should, and she forced herself to take another step, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts.
She should have been walking the familiar patrol paths near the academy, checking for Day Class stragglers, looking for disturbances. This was routine. Safe. Yet tonight... tonight felt wrong, as though the forest itself had turned against her, and with each step the shadows deepened, the darkness thickening like a living fog that pressed against her skin. Her mind raced with the warnings she had read, the rules she had tried to memorize. "Stay calm. Always stay calm." She repeated the mantra under her breath, trembling. "Focus, Yuki. Just patrol. Nothing will happen. Nothing..."
A branch snapped nearby, too deliberate, too loud. She froze. "I—I'm fine. Just a branch. Just... just a branch..." She swallowed hard, tasting the copper tang of her own fear. "Okay. Keep going. Don't—don't look back."
Then it came. A sound that made her blood run cold—a low, wet, horrible gurgle that seemed to crawl into her chest. A wet rasping that could only belong to something alive, and yet... not alive, not like a human. Her body stiffened, every instinct screaming to run, to scream, to hide. Her legs refused to move. Slowly, painfully, she turned toward the source.
And there it was.
The creature emerged from the shadows, a grotesque, jerking parody of a human, muscles knotted and unnatural beneath pale, stretched skin, veins black as ink crawling like dark rivers across its arms and neck. Its eyes were yellow, intelligent, cruel, and fixed on her, and she felt her stomach drop as bile rose unbidden. Her throat went dry. "No... no... this isn't real. I—I can't..." she whispered. Her hands shook so badly around the Rod she thought she might drop it. "I've never... never fought a vampire before..."
The creature hissed, wet, guttural, and lunged.
"Stay back! Stay away from me!" she screamed, her voice high-pitched and breaking. "I—I don't know what to do! Someone help me! Please!" She swung the Rod frantically, clumsy arcs and panicked thrusts, anything to keep it at bay, but her strikes barely grazed the thing. It shrieked, a sound like nails across stone, and came again, faster, stronger. Her back slammed into a tree, the impact jarring her teeth together and sending a shock of pain down her spine.
"I can't... I can't die here!" she gasped, fumbling with the Rod, swinging wildly. "I—I have to fight... I have to survive! Yuki, think! You've studied this!"
Branches tore at her uniform as she scrambled backward, trying to maintain distance, but the forest seemed to conspire against her. Roots snagged her boots, rocks jutted up underfoot, and the Level E pressed forward, relentless, claws snapping where her head had just been. "Ah! No! Please, don't—don't come closer!" She stumbled, rolled aside just in time to avoid a clawed swipe, dirt and blood mingling on her cheek.
Her hands gripped the Rod, shaking, teeth gritted. "I... I don't know how!" she breathed, panic roaring in her ears. "I—I can't do this! I'm not ready!"
And then—hard. Bone-crunching, skull-splitting pain as her head struck the base of a tree. The world tilted, stretched, then shattered into light and white, fragments stabbing her vision like shards of glass. Stars or sunlight or fire danced behind her eyelids, and for a terrifying heartbeat, she was weightless, floating in a void of sound and color.
Then the memories hit.
Not hers. Not yet. Gravestones gleaming in sunlight, stakes piercing monster hearts, screams echoing through empty streets, laughter and tears tangled together, battles fought and won and lost over and over. Faces she had never known in this life, friends she had loved, enemies she had slain, sacrifices she had made—everything crashed through her skull at once, violent and unrelenting.
Her arms moved on their own. Her legs followed instinct, not thought. She ducked under the Level E's claw, spun, thrust the Artemis Rod with a force and precision she had never possessed. The creature shrieked in confusion and rage as her strike hit squarely in the chest. The Rod extended fully, silver catching the moonlight, and with a scream that seemed to belong to the forest itself, it drove into the Level E.
Time slowed, her panic replaced with a strange clarity. She could feel the pulse of the forest, the rhythm of the creature, the arc of her own strength. The Rod thrummed in her hands, an extension of her body, and she twisted it. The Level E's scream rose, broken, horrible, and then—silence. It dissolved into ash at her feet, swirling into the wind, leaving only the echo of what had just happened.
Yuki collapsed to her knees, chest heaving, blood and sweat mingling, fingers trembling around the Rod as she tried to comprehend what had just occurred. "I... I did it... I killed it... I—I survived..." Her voice was a whisper, hoarse, trembling. The memories flooded again, not just of victory, but of responsibility, of lives lost, of friends mourned, of battles fought across time, across worlds.
She clutched her head, breath coming in ragged sobs, her mind spinning. "I... remember everything... I've done this before... I can do this..."
Her legs trembled as she pushed herself upright, the Rod feeling like a natural extension of her arms now, the weight and balance perfect. Shadows no longer seemed alive, no longer threatening. The rustling leaves were nothing more than wind, the night silent but watching.
"No... no more fear," she whispered, voice low, trembling with determination. "I... I will not be afraid ever again."
She surveyed the clearing, the ashes of the Level E scattered at her boots. For the first time that night, Yuki Cross understood the truth of who she was. She was no longer simply a girl, no longer merely a student patrolling for stray classmates. She was the Slayer reborn, the predator and protector, the Chosen. The one who would stand against monsters that thought themselves eternal. And as the moonlight spilled across the forest floor, illuminating the remains of her first kill, she realized with awe and terror that nothing in her life would ever be simple again.
