BACKSTORY

Itzel was raised as a commoner alongside her mother, her father, and later her younger sister, Delilah.

Yet her childhood was marked by a striking contrast.

Before Delilah was born, Itzel often spent time with her extended family, the Sully's who lived in wealth and comfort.

In their grand homes and lavish surroundings, she saw a life far removed from the modest one she returned to each day, a life where hunger, illness, and uncertainty rarely lingered at the door.

When Delilah was born, her father worked tirelessly to provide what he could for the family.

Though their means were limited, they lived with warmth and quiet resilience.

But two years later, a devastating plague swept through the village.

With no cure and little understanding of the illness, it spread mercilessly, claiming the lives of countless villagers, children, parents, and elders alike.

Among the infected was Delilah.

For months the family fought to keep the young girl alive, clinging to hope despite the suffering surrounding them.

But in the end, Delilah passed away at only two years old.

By the time the plague finally faded, the village had been forever changed, haunted by the many graves it had left behind.

Delilah's death changed everything for Itzel. During the long months of the plague, she had turned to books given to her by her aunt.

Within their pages she discovered a fascination with biology, medicine, and the mysteries of the human body and mind.

Witnessing so much suffering, and powerless to save her own sister, awakened a determination within her: she would become a doctor.

But grief had broken her father.

After losing Delilah, he could not bear the thought of losing another child, and he grew fearful of Itzel leaving home to travel and study. Still, her resolve remained.

Itzel dreams of becoming a physician not for glory or wealth, but so that one day fewer mothers will have to bury their children, and fewer children will be left to bury their parents.
