The sky above Alfea burned gold in the late afternoon light, warm and peaceful a fragile kind of peace.

Inside the courtyard of Bloom paced near the fountain, her thoughts louder than the chatter of fairies around her. Being the Fairy of the Dragon Flame meant strength. Leadership. Responsibility.

It also meant enemies.

She tried to shake the feeling creeping up her spine a chill that didn't belong to the sunny day.

And then the temperature dropped.

The fountain froze solid in seconds.

Gasps echoed through the courtyard as frost crept across marble tiles like silver veins. A sharp wind spiraled downward from the sky, carrying with it the unmistakable signature of dark magic.

A portal of swirling ice split the air open.

From it stepped Icy.

Her long pale hair shimmered like fresh snow under moonlight, though the sun still shone. Her blue eyes locked instantly onto Bloom, not with the chaotic rage Bloom was used to but with something sharper. Focused.

Personal.

"Miss me?" Icy's voice cut through the courtyard, smooth as glass.

Bloom's hands ignited instinctively, Dragon Flame dancing across her palms. "Not even a little."

The other students scattered as a wall of ice erupted behind Icy, sealing off escape routes. Bloom stepped forward instead of back.

"You never learn," Bloom said, though her heart was racing. Something was different. Icy hadn't brought the Trix. She was alone.

Icy tilted her head. "On the contrary. I've learned quite a lot."

With a flick of her wrist, razor-sharp icicles launched forward. Bloom countered with a burst of fire, steam exploding between them in a violent hiss. Heat and cold collided in a blinding cloud.

When it cleared, Icy was closer.

Too close.

Their magic crackled against each other  flame against frost  neither overpowering the other. Bloom could feel it: Icy wasn't trying to destroy her.

She was testing her.

"Why are you here?" Bloom demanded, pushing back with a surge of heat that forced Icy to slide several feet across the frozen ground.

Icy steadied herself, boots scraping ice. For a moment, she didn't attack again.

Instead, she smirked.

"You're stronger than before," she said softly. "Good."

Bloom blinked. "That's not an answer."

A shadow flickered across Icy's expression gone as quickly as it came. "There are forces moving in the shadows of the Magic Dimension. Older than the Trix. Older than your precious Dragon Flame."

Bloom's fire faltered just slightly.

"I don't need your riddles."

"No," Icy replied, her voice lowering. "You need me."

The words hung between them, absurd and electric.

Before Bloom could respond, the ground beneath them shattered not from fire or ice, but from something darker. A pulse of violet energy erupted from the sky, neither warm nor cold.

Both girls looked up at the same time.

That wasn't their magic.

For the first time, Bloom saw uncertainty flash across Icy's icy blue eyes.

"You didn't do that," Bloom said.

Icy's jaw tightened. "Obviously."

Another pulse rocked the courtyard, stronger now. A crack tore across the sky like fractured glass.

Without thinking, Bloom grabbed Icy's wrist as debris fell toward them, shielding them both in a dome of Dragon Flame. Icy's eyes widened at the contact  but she didn't pull away.

The fire glowed around them, reflecting off ice-blue hair and snow-pale skin.

For a heartbeat, the world outside vanished.

"Don't misunderstand," Icy said quietly, her voice far less venomous than usual. "I'm not here to save you."

Bloom met her gaze, heat swirling around them. "Good. Because I don't need saving."

A slow smile curved Icy's lips.

"Then I suppose," she murmured, "we'll just have to save the world."

Outside the flaming barrier, the sky continued to crack.

And for the first time since they had met, fire and ice stood on the same side.
