Lila plopped into the jump seat beside the cockpit, breathless and smiling.

“Good morning, Captain Grumpy.”

Ethan didn’t look up from his pre-flight checklist. “It’s Captain Cross.”

She leaned closer, lowering her voice like she was sharing a secret.

“Grumpy suits you better.”

His jaw tightened. He finally glanced at her, dark eyes sharp and unreadable.
“You ever stop talking?”

She grinned wider. “Only when I’m asleep. And even then, I’ve been told I mumble.”

He exhaled slowly, like a man counting to ten.

“You’re a distraction.”

“Funny,” she said softly. “I was about to say the same thing about you.”

Silence stretched. Charged. Dangerous.

Ethan straightened, towering over her.

“Stay in your lane, Monroe.”

Her smile faltered—just for a second.

“Careful, Captain,” she whispered.

“You’re already standing in mine.”

Something dark flickered in his gaze.

And for the first time, turbulence wasn’t coming from the sky.
