The stadium lights were blinding
Michael Kaiser stood at the center of it all chin raised expression sharp and confident as ever The crowd roared his name voices crashing together like waves against stone To them he was untouchable perfect cold brilliant
Alexis Ness watched from just a step behind
His eyes followed Kaiser instinctively as they always did He noted the angle of his shoulders the calm tension in his posture the way his gaze never wavered even under thousands of eyes Kaiser thrived here This was his world
And Ness was part of it just not in the way the crowd understood Don't fall behind Kaiser said suddenly, not turning around
Ness blinked then smiled faintly I wouldn't dream of it
Kaiser scoffed but there was something familiar about it Comfortable Expected
As they walked off the field together Ness felt it again that quiet pull in his chest The unspoken understanding between them The way Kaiser never had to look back to know Ness was there
In the locker room the noise faded. The cheers became distant echoes replaced by the hum of fluorescent lights and the shuffle of cleats against the floor
Kaiser sat down stretching his legs eyes half lidded For just a moment the emperor looked tired
Ness noticed You played brilliantly today Ness said gently handing him a towel
Kaiser took it without comment wiping sweat from his face Obviously
But his tone lacked its usual sharpness
Ness hesitated then sat beside him
The silence between them wasn't awkward It never was It was the kind that only existed between people who had spent countless hours together sharing victories losses and everything in between
Kaiser finally spoke again, voice quieter
You kept up
Ness's fingers tightened slightly around his own towel.
I always will he replied
And for a brief second Kaiser looked at him not past him not over him but directly at him
Something unspoken lingered there.
Then Kaiser stood Get ready We're not done yet
As he walked away,Ness exhaled slowly heart beating just a little faster
He didn't know what
But something told him this was only the beginning
