Everyone had gone upstairs to eat Mrs. Wheeler's lasagna except for Mike. He put his binder on the shelf and started to make his way up the stairs. Just before he got halfway up, Holly and her friends came barging down past him and started to set up their own D&D campaign.
Mike watched his little sister with a small smile on his face, he remembered what it felt to be young, god he would do anything to feel like that again, to go back to that night Will went missing and convinced him to sleepover, to not have lost his childhood. But that was never going to happen and he knew it.
All his friends had plans for their futures, but he was too scared. Too scared to move on and accept what happened. But more importantly, too scared to accept himself. He had been feeling things he shouldn't have towards his best friend, he kept telling himself that they were just best friends and he didn't like Will that way. But as time goes on, it gets harder for him to deny the feeling he gets when he's with Will. Mike sighed as he climbed the rest of the stairs, shut the door and walked into the dining room. The only open seat was next to Will, so he smiled and sat down next to him.
"Here" Will handed Mike a plate, "I saved you some. With Lucas here you never know how much he'll eat." he laughed as Lucas flipped him off while shoving lasagna down his throat. Mike thanked Will and started to eat slowly, thoughts rushing through his mind.
Why is he always so nice to me? I've been an asshole to him for the last year.
He found himself staring at Will, his lips to be exact, a habit he noticed he's been doing for a while now. He shook his head to snap out of it and finished his dinner. He was not gay, he had loved El. Right? He could never bring himself to say it to her though, even before she sacrificed herself, he couldn't tell her that he loved her. But the moment he found her in the woods he knew he loved her... or was it because he needed something to distract himself from the fact that someone he really cared about went missing.
Everyone was getting up and saying goodbye, Will was the last to head for the door. Mike had to say something to him, before it was too late. He's going to college in New York with Johnathan, what if he finds someone there, some who he loves. That's when it hits him. He loves Will, it's always been him, ever since they became friends. He was the only one who he felt like he could be himself around. The first person outside of his family that cared about Holly going missing. That's why he could never say three simple words to El, it was never her. Sure he liked her, but as a friend. He thought back to what Will had said when he came out to everyone. "He was just my Tammy" He had been talking about someone he had liked. Before he could stop himself the words came out.
"Whose Tammy?" Will stopped and turned around.
"What?"
"You said you liked some guy who wasn't like you, you called him your Tammy." A faint blush creeps into Will's cheeks.
"Oh, he's just someone I got over." Will avoid eye contact. Mike took a deep breath and stepped closer.
"Is it me?" he asked, more hopeful than he would have liked but it was too late now. Will's eyes shot wide open.
"I- well-" He looked down at his shoes defeated. "Yes, you're Tammy. But I promise I'm over you and-" Mike's heart stopped at his words. Will was over him. He couldn't believe it.
"You're over me?" Will looked up.
"I mean- not yet- But I am trying but it's really hard when all I want to do is kiss you right-" That's all Mike needed to hear, he closed the distance between their bodies and cupped his cheeks. Will froze mid sentence, his eyes flickered down to Mike's lips then quickly back up to meet his gaze.
"Can I kiss you?" Mike asked, it was more of a plead but he didn't care anymore, he knew what he wanted, and that was William Byers. Will nodded weekly, and Mike leaned in slowly giving him time to change his mind before his lips grazed over his life long best friends. Will melted into the kiss as his hands flew to Mike's hair. They pulled away, panting slightly as they rested their foreheads together. "I'm sorry it took me so long to realize how I felt about you." Mike breathed. Will smiled in return.
"You have nothing to apologize for. It took me a while to realize my feelings for you too." Mike gave a goofy grin.
"I know how I feel about you now though, and I love you. Will you be my boyfriend?" Tears welled up in Will's eyes as he nodded frantically.
"Well I'm an idiot for not doing this sooner." Mike laughed.
"Same here." Will chuckled with him. Mike smiled remembering what he had said to Will on Halloween many years ago.
"Hey, if we're idiots, then we'll be idiots together."
"Yeah, idiots together." Will replied with a smile.
