I woke up from a nightmare that started on a world not of my own making that felt like diving into a picture of an old life. The sky was a burnt orange in color, but this time the dream was different. There was a thing, horse like in nature to some extent, that followed me around and smelt of cinnamon. Despite the fact that it looked as though it was rotting away like a zombie, it felt comforting in nature.
I decided to write that dream down in a journal, not really thinking too hard about that choice before doing so, and decided that 3 in the morning was sleeping in enough compared to my normal sleep schedule, or rather a sad excuse of a sleep schedule, and got up to make coffee.
The house was dark and quiet just as I liked it. Any parental figures I'd had in these halls had long since disappeared from my life, but I was functional enough in spite of that to not ever need a roommate.
Then I heard the rhythmic clicking of bones that I heard from that horse adjacent thing from my dreams.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Sirens. That was unusual. They were too close to be the tornado sirens of the nearby town, almost deafening in nature. Something in me wanted to run, but I also wanted to sit on the couch and finish my coffee...
The clicking got closer as I went to take another sip, and the distinct smell of cinnamon began to waft through a window I hadn't realized was open. I tried to ignore it, but then something touched my shoulder. It felt like an animal's nose.
Slowly, I looked over my shoulder and saw a horse head, a long neck stretching out through the window beyond what any eye could see. There was no way that it could even be alive realistically, so I tried to go back to ignoring it. However, the sirens just kept getting closer. It hurt my ears and I could almost feel it in my bones.
Without thinking any longer, I ran from that feeling. The feeling of being hunted.
