The city lights of Chicago blurred into streaks of amber and silver outside the district's windows. Jay Halstead leaned against his desk, his badge glinting under the flickering fluorescent light. Long after most of Intelligence had gone home, there was still one reason why he stayed.

Erin Lindsay.

She sat across the room, her hair pulled into a loose ponytail, reading over her final case notes. The silence between them wasn't awkward it was thick with all the words they hadn't said since she came back from New York. Too much history, Too much longing wrapped in restraint.

" Long night? Jay finally asked, his voice gruff but soft.

" Yeah," she replied, barely looking up.  " Feels like old times, doesn't it?"

He smiled faintly. " Almost. Except now, I'm still here.... and you're the one walking away tomorrow."

Her eyes lifted, sharp and uncertain. " Jay."

" No," he interrupted gently, " I get it. You have to do what's right for you. You always did. But I need to say this before you go, before I end up regretting it again."

He crossed the room slowly, stopping just close enough to see her breath catch. " You've always been home for me, Erin. Even when you weren't here."

Her defenses faltered, the detective's mask slipping away to reveal the woman underneath the one who'd once leaned on him after losing everything. " You can't just say things like that, Jay."

" I'm not *just saying it*, he whispered, his hand brushing hers. I'm finally meaning it out loud."

The clock ticked. The moment stretched and then broke when she stepped closer, until the half-light caught her tears.

" You still don't make it easy to walk away," she said softly.

" Then don't." He says to her.
The kiss came in quiet and certain not the rushed kind stolen in dark corners, but one built on years of unspoken love. Outside, a siren wailed through the cold night, but inside, for the first time in a long time Jay Halstead wasn't chasing ghosts. He was right where his heart had always been with her.

When they pulled apart, Erin smiled breathless. " So what now, Detective Halstead?"

He grinned, brushing his thumb along her cheek. "Now? We stop running."

And under the hum of the city, Halstead’s love finally found its way home.
