Chapter 1

The fluorescent lights flickered violently, throwing jagged shadows across the cold steel floor of Eggman's facility. Nyx's paws skidded over the slick metal, silver-green sparks snapping and hissing behind her like restless lightning desperate to be unleashed. Beneath the thin hospital gown clinging to her frame, her heart slammed against her ribs—not just from fear, though fear coiled tight in her chest—but from the volatile surge of energy roaring through her veins.

Burnt circuits. Leaking fuel. Heated metal.

The air tasted sharp and electric as she ducked beneath a hanging panel, breath uneven.

She veered toward a room she knew too well. She didn't hesitate.

Inside waited the battle outfit Dr. Eggman had engineered for her—sleek, reinforced, made to withstand the power he forced her to wield. She tore off the gown and changed quickly, fingers trembling—not from weakness, but from power barely contained.

Then she stepped back into the corridor.

Alarms erupted.

"Experiment 44... containment breach detected. Deploy security units immediately."

The mechanical voice sliced through the facility, echoing off steel and bone alike. The vibration rattled in her chest. Her claws scraped the floor as she crouched instinctively, energy flaring along her limbs.

Nyx's silver-green eyes scanned everything—vents, shadows, corners, ceiling panels. Sparks crawled across her claws as her tail coiled tightly behind her like a charged wire ready to snap.

This was chaos.

But this wasn't the helpless chaos of containment.

This was freedom wrapped in danger.

And then—

Movement.

From the darkness stepped a figure, tall and controlled. Black quills edged faintly in red beneath the stuttering lights. Crimson eyes locked onto her with unnerving intensity.

Predatory. Calculating.

"You're not supposed to be here," Shadow said, his voice low and controlled—but edged with something sharper.

"I'm not staying," Nyx shot back, chin lifting despite the tremor racing through her pulse.

A patrol drone burst around the corner, targeting lasers snapping to life.

Shadow moved before she could think.

His quills ignited in a violent flare of crimson. The drone fired—he deflected it midair with a precision strike that split the energy blast in half. The shockwave cracked against the walls.

Before Nyx could react, his hand clamped around her wrist.

Heat.

Solid. Strong. Certain.

He yanked her behind a toppled console just as the drone's second blast tore through the air above them.

Their bodies collided in the narrow space.

Chest to shoulder. Hip to thigh.

For half a second, they were pressed together.

Nyx's breath caught.

His grip tightened—not painfully, but protectively. She could feel the heat radiating from him, the restrained power vibrating beneath his skin. It wasn't chaotic like hers.

It was controlled.

And that control did something unsettling to her pulse.

He released her the moment the danger shifted—but the warmth lingered.
