The old wooden clock on the living-room wall ticked like a heartbeat, loud enough to echo in the silence. YN had learned to fear that silence.
Silence meant Taehyung was thinking.
And when Taehyung was thinking, something always broke—
A glass.
A promise.
Her heart.
It was barely 6:30 in the evening, but the sky outside their house already looked bruised—purple, blue, grey… the same shades YN had once seen on her own skin. She stood in the kitchen, hands trembling slightly as she stirred the pot on the stove. The soup wasn’t perfect; she knew it before even tasting it. Nothing she did was ever perfect for him.
Her breath hitched when she heard the front door unlock.
Taehyung was home.
He didn’t slam the door the way he used to. Now he closed it quietly, almost gently. YN had learned that the quietness was worse. Loud anger exploded and ended.
Quiet anger lingered. Quiet anger waited.
Footsteps approached—slow, heavy, measured.
“YN.” His voice slid into the kitchen like cold smoke.
She turned, her eyes meeting his for a second before quickly dropping to the floor. “Dinner is almost ready.”
Taehyung walked closer, his tall frame stopping right beside her. She could smell the faint scent of his cologne—once her favourite, now a warning sign.
“I didn’t ask if it was almost ready,” he said quietly. “I asked if you heard me.”
“Yes,” she whispered. “I did.”
He tilted her chin up with two fingers, forcing her to meet his eyes. To a stranger, he would look breathtaking—sharp jawline, dark hair falling perfectly across his forehead, eyes like night rain. But YN knew better. Beauty had nothing to do with cruelty.
“Good,” he murmured, smiling a smile she knew wasn’t real.
“Because you know I don’t like repeating myself.”
Her heart raced. Her palms grew cold. But she nodded.
Taehyung stepped back, loosening his tie. “Serve the food. And don’t make it too salty this time.”
She swallowed. “I’ll try my best.”
“You’ll do better than that,” he said calmly, sliding into his chair.
And YN forced her trembling hands to work, hiding the storm inside her. Hiding the truth she never dared to speak aloud—
She was scared of him.
Scared of the silence.
Scared of the house that never slept.
But somewhere deep beneath the fear, a tiny voice still whispered:
One day… one day I’ll be free.
Little did she know—that day would come with screams, secrets, and shadows she didn’t yet understand.
Because in this house, the silence didn’t just scare her.
It watched her.
