"What's it like in America?" James asks. "Hm?" I say, trying to speak as little as possible. Mcgonagall is already glaring daggers at us as we've just finished giggling at each other for the third time this morning. I offer her a small smile and get back to writing my notes.
"I just realized I've never asked you." James replies. "So what was it like? And what was Ilvermorny like?" Before I can answer, my body tenses and I shiver.
James is focused on writing notes, for once, so he doesn't see how that question makes me feel. He doesn't understand the gravity of what he's asking. "It's hard to talk about..." I start, thinking about all the people and memories Voldemort took from me. "You don't have to tell me. I'm just curious since you transferred here so late."
"Honestly, I don't remember a lot of it." James looks at me with furrowed eyebrows. "After my parents passed, I blacked out. When I gained back consciousness, I had started at Ilvermorny, made friends, and it was my birthday. More than a year had passed and I didn't remember any of it. And I barely remember anything else now." I finally reply with a half truth.
"Tell me more about when we're alone. I want to understand you, Grace." James kissed me on the forehead. One touch from him and the world falls away. I wish it was always like this. Just me and James. No Voldemort, no Dumbledore, no death eaters, especially no more teenage death eaters. "You can try." I say under my breath. I looked to James, hoping he didn't hear. Sure enough, he's still writing away.

"You can try." It runs through my mind. I chose not to acknowledge what Melora said. I could tell it wasn't meant for my ears. I will try and I will find a way to understand her. I want to know everything there is to know about her.

MELORA
As I walked into Muggle Studies, I spotted Regulus. Noticing that he was a lot more fidgety than usual. He realizes I'm walking toward our shared desk and he eases.
"Are you okay Reggie?" I ask, now that I'm closer, I realize that he's sweating. I put my hand on his back and he falls into my arms. Hugging around my waist. "Do you remember what I said last class?" He asks.
"No, I wasn't here. Are you still mad about that? Look, I'm really sorry..." He interrupts me, his voice muffled against my robes. "No, I could care fucking less. The class before that." He sits up in his chair. I rack my brain trying to remember. He's staring into my eyes when it finally dawns on me. He talked about how he wasn't sure if we were on the right side.
As if he could see that I remembered, he started, "I just want you to know that I love you. You're my best friend and the best person I know."
"You're scaring me. What's going on?" I staid grabbing hold of his forearm. I can't lose anyone else. I thought. "You better not do anything stupid." I say, pulling him by the arm I'm holding into a hug. "It's not stupid." He says into my ear and hold me tightly.
"You ready for tonight?" He asks. "Fuck. How do you keep track of everything? I swear I would forget my own head without you." I laugh and lean my head on his shoulder while we sit through another unbearable lecture.

Regulus holds open the large snake patterned doors in Malfoy Manor. We enter and sit in our usual seats at a shockingly long table. Voldemort enters and I can feel the weight I lost in class with James come back to rest on my shoulders.
"I-uh sorry I'm late my Lord." I hear a familiar voice. I look up and see Gryffindor robes. But not just Gryffindor robes, it's Peter Pettigrew. Regulus and I look to each other and then at Peter, who looks back at us with an unreadable expression.
"Sit." Is the Dark Lord's only reply. "Now, Melora." He whispers as he strides to my seat. He lifts my chin with a cracked and gray finger. "Does the Potter boy love you yet?" I can't show how frightened I am of him, so I reply instantly. "I believe so."
"Good." He draws out. "Get him to admit it, and then his time will come and you will do what must be done."
"I prefer a bit of Crucio before I give 'em the ol' Avada Kedevra." Bellatrix says eagerly with the biggest smile I've ever seen. "Mmm, yes. I much love a combination." Lucius chimes in. They had both only been out of Hogwarts for a few years, but how could they become so bad with so much good around them, I thought. But then I thought, same for Regulus and I. And now Peter too. Why did we end up here?
I stared at the table, disassociating, until the long and horrific Death-eater meeting was over. Regulus tapped my arm and we left immediately. Peter ended up catching up to us. We really did not want to know why he was there. Luckily, he didn't say anything. He just walked with us until we needed to split to go to our own commons.
"I'll catch up. I'm gonna see if I can find a snack anywhere." Regulus said once we reached the Slytherin commons. "I'll come with." I offered. "No it's okay, get some rest. I'll see you at breakfast."
"Okay, have fun on your solo mission. I bid you well soldier." I salute him. "Yes sergeant." He saluted me back. We laugh and he pulls me into a hug. "Wow, third one today. You feeling sentimental?" I tease.
He pushes me back out, but holds both my arms tightly. "Thank you for being my best friend." "Thank you for being mine." I reply with a smile. My expression quickly turns to a worried one. "Wait, is this about what you said in Muggle Studies? Please be careful with whatever you're doing. I'm worried about you Regulus."
"Yikes, full name. But no, I'm just getting a snack. I'll be back soon." And with that, he turned back the way we came.
I can't help but worry, so I sat down on the big green couch in the commons and curled up under a blanket to wait. Waiting and waiting, at least thirty minutes had to of passed by now. But I am much too tired to stay up any longer. So I spread out to lie on the couch. I'm sure Reggie will wake me up when he gets back.
