Faiza Muhammad.
Kano Nigeria.
"So, you'll come back after a week?" I asked, looking at him.
"Yes," he answered, removing his glasses.
"Okay," I said… but deep down, my mind was worried. I was worried.
"Sleep early, you'll escort me to the airport," he said. I kept quiet, looking at him.
"Or don’t you want to come?" he asked.
I shook my head slowly.
"Come and help me with something," he said, walking to the front. I followed him.
Turned out, I was going to help him pack some clothes.
"You see, maybe I'm leaving for Italy… to check on the things I ordered," he said, handing some clothes to me as I put them in the box.
"Ohhh," I said.
"Faiza?"
"Yes?"
"Missing me already?"
"Hell no," I said, glaring playfully at him. He smiled.
"I found a driver for you," he said.
"He'll be taking you to school and waiting for you. If you want to go anywhere, he'll take you," he added.
"Thank you," I said with a smile.
"Okay, let's sleep," he said, walking me to my room.
"Goodnight," he said, walking out.
I sat at the edge of my bed. I don’t know what’s wrong with me… why do I even feel bothered that he’s not here? Ugh. I ruffled my hair and threw myself onto my bed.
A soft knock came at the door. I just looked at it until it opened.
"I almost forgot," he said, walking in. He placed something on my dressing mirror.
"It's an ATM card with its pin so you won't forget," he said.
"Ohh… thank you," I answered, smiling at him.
"Good night," he said, walking out.
I sat on my bed, thinking for a while, before finally falling asleep.
Ummi Nayna and I were escorting him to the airport, with the new driver he found for me.
"So… see you soon," I waved.
"Don't miss me too much," he said with a smile.
"I won't even miss you," I answered, laughing.
I don’t know when I suddenly found myself in his arms. He hugged me for a while before gently pulling back. "Make sure you don’t miss me," he repeated.
"Please, this is your love oo," Nayna said, approaching us.
"Will you be back before the dinner party?" she asked, looking at him.
"Well, maybe a day before, or on that day," he answered.
"Take care of my wife, please," he said, looking at her, then turned his gaze to me. He flashed me a smile one more time before leaving, while we drove off.
I don’t have lectures today, so I stayed at home. The house felt empty… really empty. Though he used to be away during the day, it still felt different.
The sound of the doorbell brought me back to life. I stretched my hands slightly before standing up.
"Coming," I said, walking toward the door.
"Aunty Fa’ee!" Nayna squealed. I don’t think this girl knows what sadness is, she’s always happy.
"Come in," I said with a smile.
