Chapter One:
The Sentence That Saved a Life
The bell rang — not with chimes, but with a low, metallic groan. It echoed through the halls like a warning. Students flinched. Pages fluttered. Somewhere, a pencil snapped.
Miss Quill stood at the threshold of her classroom, emerald dress catching the dim light, silver pen tucked into her sleeve like a dagger of truth. Her monocle glinted as she scanned the corridor — not for lesson plans, but for survivors.
Down the hall, Claire stumbled. Her test paper was marked in red — not ink, but something darker. Miss Circle's voice thundered from behind:
"Failure is final, child."
Claire ran.
Miss Quill moved faster.
With a flick of her wrist, she drew a glowing line across the floor — a barrier of ink that hissed as Miss Circle approached. The hallway dimmed. Runes pulsed on Miss Quill's sleeves. She reached for Claire's hand and pulled her into the classroom, slamming the door behind them.
Inside, the air changed. Desks floated slightly above the ground. Scrolls whispered. The walls shimmered with protective spells written in forgotten languages.
Claire collapsed, sobbing. Miss Quill knelt beside her, pressing the silver pen into her palm.
"Every sentence is a spell," she whispered. "Choose wisely."
Outside, the teachers circled. Inside, Miss Quill began her lesson — not on grammar, but on survival. And somewhere deep in the school, a door marked Alice's Room pulsed faintly, as if it had heard the name Claire.
