The sky cried today. But not the gentle crystalline droplets that would usually fall. Not even the waves and waves of bucketing rain that would pour. Not snow nor ice. It cried blood, falling from the sky like slow viscous waterfalls. The streets were speckled red, the smell of iron filled the world outside. The red seeped under the doors, through the windows. Blood had been spilled from the sky.
A loud groan could be heard from above, like a dog making its last desperate attempt for air. More and more crimson blood poured. The gentle rain turning to a downpour, as though all the blood in the world had been fed to the clouds. Small chunks of flesh followed suit, slapping against the asphalt and concrete of the roads, wet and mushy as it hit the floor. They started small, maybe the size of a mouse or a rat. The squelching of meat hitting the road echoed down the streets for all to hear. There was no escape from the nauseating sounds. They began to rot just as they hit the ground, almost instantaneously, as though whatever they came from had been dead a long time. And yet the sounds of groaning, the freshly spilled blood, it all happened today, starting a mere hour ago.
An eye. An eye the size of a house fell into the town square, the statue of its founder piercing through it, it sounded like piercing a soggy grape, everyone could hear it. Liquid spilled out from the eye, seeping into the grass, flowing into the pond. A mix of blood and welled up tears. The optic nerve had whipped against the road, a thick crimson roadblock. Then a tongue. The wet mass of muscle collided against the roof of the church, the back looked ripped and ragged, like it had been ripped out of whatever beings mouth that it had came from by force. The saliva left on it dripped slowly over the plants lining the church, its symbolic cross having pierced through the middle tip of the tongue like a piercing. A bloodied tooth crashed next to it, crushing a statue in the courtyard.
The mixed smells of fresh and rotting flesh confused the senses. A nauseous feeling washing all over. Seeing these impossibly large pieces of flesh, and ones that look so human like. The blood filling the streets, the tears. It was soon accompanied by bile as people retched up anything they had left, the nauseating smell forcing out the contents of their stomachs. The blood began to stir. What was once only slightly moving as it did with gravity and the natural forces, began to move unnaturally. It swirled and spiked, sections crystalising and cracking. Tendrils reached from the pools, clotted tendrils of blood slowly slinking outwards, travelling along the ground.
The tendrils reached for flesh, but not the flesh that had fallen, it craved new flesh. The people who hadn't escaped the rain, doubled over retching up bile, they were quickly pulled down by the clotted vines. The clots quickly wrapped there whole way around the people, stretching them out, backs against the bloodied ground. The tendrils wrapped around their wrists and ankles, slowly encircling them like constrictor snakes. They slowly climbed their way to their mouths, wriggling between their lips and feeding itself down, taking hold of them entirely. The blood began to pull them under. The liquid covering the earth was barely even a centimeter thick, and yet they sank deeper and deeper into it, until the tips of there noses were enveloped. There was no sign of them thereafter. The blood was still, and it remained shallow. It didn't rise, it didn't fall.
A second groan sounded from the sky. Deeper, more desperate. It ended quicker than the first. Then another. More aggressive, agonising. Then another. Then another. Six sounded. Seven total. Seven cries of desperate pain. The blood pouring grew and grew, a storm of liquid crimson. The hail of flesh grew stronger, larger chunks, more jagged and torn than the last. Blood began to gush out from the flesh, thick and warm. The clotted tendrils took the form of hands and arms, reaching towards the sky, grabbing any animal or person that dare draw close, searching for new flesh to consume.
The animals had tried to flee, all migrating for safety. But there truly is no safety. The blood will pour over every corner of the earth, the flesh will still fall. And now it is as if they know this. For the deer, the rabbits, the foxes, the wolves, they're all now still, ears pricked, standing side by side with one another, prey and predator unnaturally unified. They're all listening, listening towards the ground and sky. And slowly, there ears fell, and they walked towards the hands. Slowly moving. A cacophony of hooves and padded paws treading gently on the bloodied floor. They lowered their heads and submitted to the consumption, the hands laying gently on their heads, as they slowly sank down. A lone deer was left, it didn't look towards where it fellow deer had disappeared, it looked at me. Its mouth opened, slowly and unnaturally. And it spoke thus.
"Humanity is to join God in heaven. Within his mind, his flesh, his bones, his blood. All shall join the kingdom of heaven. All shall become one. One shall be Him."
I reached out my hand, reaching for the clotted limb in front of me, and soon enough I was consumed. It was dark and quiet, wet, like floating in liquid. A womb almost. The liquid inside pulsed rhythmically, as though whatever casing I was inside was beating, like a heart. I tried to reach out, to find how far my cocoon stretched, but my limbs were trapped. I had taken the shape of a fetus, curled in on myself with no space to move.
"Humanity is to join God in heaven. Within his mind, his flesh, his bones, his blood. All shall join the kingdom of heaven. All shall become one. One shall be Him."
That quote echoed through my mind. I am in heaven. I am in God. I have joined him. Become him. We are one in his kingdom. And in my mind, in the depths, behind what had slowly begun to numb into an ignorant calm. I knew one thing. All flesh-based life is here. Every human, every animal. And more. Earth was not the first. We shall not be the last.
"Living is to join God in heaven. Within his mind, his flesh, his bones, his blood. All shall join the kingdom of heaven. All shall become one. One shall be Him. Across time and space. For eternity he shall consume."
