Malachi glanced up — just as Eva laughed at something Ariana whispered.
He shook his head. "I can't help it."
MK leaned back. "So why aren't you doing anything?"
Malachi looked down. "Because she asked me to wait. And I meant what I said — I'll wait. But if Jace gets near her again..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't have to.

Outside the trailer, Eva stepped out to get fresh air. Malachi followed a minute later.
She turned when she heard the door close, her expression unreadable.
"Didn't think you'd come out."
"Didn't want to. But I can't be in that room pretending I'm okay watching someone else flirt with you."
She sighed, stepping closer. "I hate this."
"Then stop running."
She stared at him, torn.
He stepped forward again — close enough to touch her, but didn't.
"I'll wait for you," he whispered again. "But I won't wait quietly."
She turned away before he could see the full effect of that.
But her fingers brushed his as she passed back into the trailer. Just enough to say: I feel it too.
