The air was too clean. That was the first thing Hana noticed.

It smelled like metal and antiseptic, not like the sun-warmed gardens she used to visit with her nanny or the soft paper of the books she'd loved to hold with tiny hands. No, this place was all angles and silence — glass walls, chrome tables, and the faint hum of electricity threading through every wall like invisible veins.

She sat perfectly still on a padded bench in the corner of the room, feet swinging slightly above the floor. Her pale pink dress was freshly ironed. Her dark brown hair was pulled back with surgical precision, tied with a single satin ribbon — the only thing soft about her.

"Back straight. Eyes forward. Hands still."
The instructions rang in her ears like the Commission's lullaby.

From the mirrored glass above, a pair of eyes watched her. She didn't need to look to know it was her mother. She always watched.

"This is her first formal assignment. Observation and emotional conditioning."
The voice wasn't warm. It was clinical. Detached. Like reading off a lab report.

"She will oversee T-17's corrective development."
T-17. That was the subject's designation. A boy. Older. Problematic.

Keigo Takami.

The sound of hissing hydraulics signaled the chamber door opening.

He was shoved in hard — off-balance, hair tangled and wild, cuffs still hanging from one wrist. His body was thin and tense, like he was wired to spring or collapse at any moment. One wing dragged slightly, clipped in more places than it should've been. Scarring was already forming where feathers had been violently removed.

Hana didn't flinch.

He did.

Their eyes met.

His were sharp — golden-brown, tired, and mean in the way all scared animals are. He didn't blink. Didn't break the gaze. He looked at her like she was another cage.

She simply sat there, quiet and calm.

"That her?" he asked, voice rough from disuse. "The Commission's new favorite toy?"
"You will address her as Operator H from this moment forward," someone from behind the glass corrected coldly.
Keigo scoffed. "How about I don't."

He took one look at Hana's dress and the ribbon in her hair and sneered.

"She looks like she belongs in a dollhouse, not here."
Still, she didn't react.

She had been trained not to.

Instead, she stood — small hands at her sides — and stepped toward him.

"I'm not here to be in charge of you," she said quietly. Her voice was soft, the barest whisper of breath. "But if I am... I'll do my best not to hurt you."
That stopped him.

He frowned, head tilting. Like he didn't understand the language she was speaking.

"Hurt me?" he echoed.
She nodded.

"They punish me when you fail. So if I have to lead... I'll take the pain. You shouldn't have to."
His brows furrowed, confusion breaking through the hostility.

She didn't flinch when he stepped forward — didn't retreat, didn't challenge him. Just watched.

"You're weird," he said.
"I know."
"You're soft."
"Not where it matters."
Silence stretched between them like a drawn wire.

He looked toward the mirrored glass — at the people watching. Then back at her.

"This place eats kids like you."
She smiled then. Just barely.

"Then I'll learn how to bite back."
They were paired that day.

Operator H and Subject T-17. Commission-approved.

They trained together, slept in adjacent cells, and reported to separate handlers. But over time, they stopped reacting to pain, and started reacting to each other.

Later that night, Keigo pressed his forehead to the cool glass wall between their rooms.

"Hey," he said softly, voice barely audible.
Across the room, Hana sat on her cot, a bandage on her wrist.

She turned her head.

"Thanks," he muttered. "For not making it worse."
"You're welcome."
"You'll break, you know," he said after a pause. "They'll break you."
She looked down at the ribbon in her hand. It was wrinkled now — pulled loose during drills.

"Maybe," she said. "But not today."
