The air was always quiet in William’s penthouse apartment—too quiet for a home with a three-year-old child.
Fah sat curled up in the corner of the living room, sketching something on the back of a Zeven meeting handout. His little fingers clutched a crayon, tongue slightly sticking out in concentration. On the paper, a stick figure with spiky hair held hands with a shorter one. Both were smiling.
William glanced up from his laptop at the breakfast counter, eyes lingering on the child across the room. "Fah..." he called softly.
The boy didn’t respond.
William tried again, gentler this time. “Papa will be late today. Okay?”
Fah didn’t nod. Didn’t look up. But his little hand lifted and tapped his chest, then pointed to William. A gesture he’d learned to express “Papa.” The only word he ever said.
A sharp ache settled in William’s chest.
Three years old. Bright. Curious. But he only ever said one word.
Papa.
It was a beautiful word. But also a curse.
---
He had taken Fah in without question after the accident—when his brother, Keen, and Keen’s ex, Ploy, were killed. The two of them had broken up before the twins were born, but they made a strange decision: each would raise one child.
And so William became a father at twenty-two, without warning.
He remembered Keen’s last voice message clearly.
> “Will, I’m serious. Fah's yours now. Just like that. You’ve always been better with kids than me anyway.”
He didn’t feel “better.”
He felt like a fraud every day.
And worse—he hadn’t known his ex-girlfriend, Nisa, was mistreating Fah behind his back. It wasn’t until after their messy breakup that small signs emerged. Bruises. Fear. Silence. Doctors found no physical trauma. But emotionally? Fah had locked the world out—except for William.
---
Now, William walked over to the boy and crouched beside him.
“What are you drawing?”
Fah held it up.
Two stick figures. One clearly him, the other... William? They were holding hands. A third figure was drawn next to them, with long hair and a big smile.
William smiled faintly. “Who’s this?”
Fah tapped his crayon against the long-haired figure, then pointed to himself. Then pointed to the paper again.
He wanted someone else in their world.
A friend?
---
Later that morning, William dropped Fah off at the company’s on-site daycare—a luxury Zeven provided for employees. William never liked leaving him, but the building was secure, the staff were kind, and he had meetings stacked from 10 to 6.
Meanwhile...
---
On the 7th floor of the same building, Dr. Est was carrying two coffees in one hand and a unicorn lunchbox in the other.
“Fon, walk straight—don’t spin, Mama’s hands are full!”
Fon spun anyway, her little pigtails bouncing.
“Okay, okay!” Est laughed and set the lunchbox down to catch her hand. “Seriously, are you trying to break Mama’s ankle?”
“You said Mama! You said it again!” Fon grinned triumphantly.
Est groaned. “That’s because you keep calling me Mama. It’s messing with my head, Fon.”
“You are Mama,” Fon said matter-of-factly. “Not Papa. You’re too pretty to be Papa.”
“...Thanks?”
---
They reached the pediatric lounge, where Est had a small side office. He was checking patient reports when Fon suddenly tugged his coat.
“I wanna go explore. Can I? Just a little? Please?”
Est sighed. “Only near this floor. And only for ten minutes. If I don’t see you, I’m calling the guards.”
“Deal!”
She ran off before he could regret it.
---
Fate was funny.
On Floor 5, Fah had gotten curious. He slipped away during music playtime, clutching his drawing in hand.
And somewhere near the glass lobby on Floor 6, Fon met Fah.
A loud little whirlwind and a silent shadow boy.
---
She blinked. “Hey... you’re small like me!”
Fah tilted his head, wide eyes watching her. Clutching his drawing tighter.
Fon stepped closer and held out a hand. “I’m Fon. What’s your name?”
Fah looked down.
Silence.
She tilted her head. “Don’t wanna talk?”
Fah glanced at her, then slowly held out his paper.
Fon took it.
“Woaaah! You drew this?! That’s so cool!” She pointed to the third person in the drawing. “This is me, right?”
Fah’s eyes sparkled, and he nodded slightly.
Fon beamed.
And from that moment, something clicked.
They became a pair.
---
Meanwhile, in a boardroom above them, William was panicking.
“Check the cameras! Where’s Fah?!”
