Second Chances

The Start

Nervous, that's how Rae'Lyn felt all day. She didn't know why but she had a gut feeling that she was about to have a terrible day. Despite this feeling She'd had a normal day so far. She went to work, doing her job as the top Chef at a restaurant called "Food World", and everything went by smoothly. Still she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. She went home to her boyfriend, Carson. Everything at home seemed fine. She'd gotten home, she took a shower and even made dinner for her and Carson. They were actually having dinner when shit hit the fan, "...so remember when I was telling you about the food critic that was supposed to come next week?" Rae'Lyn asked her boyfriend as they sat on the living room couch, a random movie playing in the background. "Yeah you've only mentioned this a thousand times" he joked. He was actually proud of his girlfriend's accomplishments he remembered when she was in culinary school working her ass off every day to learn to be the best, and she was indeed the best when she graduated. So when she applied for the job as a chef at "Food World" she'd gotten the job on the spot. It didn't take long for her to become head chef neither, and he was extremely proud of her. "Ha ha... well he came in today instead and...." Rae'Lyn's sentence was cut off by the sound of loud banging at the front door.

"HELP ME... HELP ME..HE..AHHH"is all they heard before they both glanced at each other for a second before hopping up and running to the front door. Carson reaches for the door knob hesitantly as Rae'Lyn stood behind him holding onto his free arm nervously. Their neighborhood was relatively safe so this was kind of surprising. Right before Carson could open the door the TV in the living room started blaring some kind of alarm, dropping his hand from the door knob Carson pulls Rae'Lyn to the livingroom. "This is not a test... I repeat this is not a test, this is an emergency, this is a very serious situation." the tv starts showing scenes that Rae'Lyn had only seen in movies. There on the tv screen seemed to be a badly injured looking man literally tearing into another man's body as the other man cried out for help.... Rae'Lyn looks to Carson, with nothing but fear in her eyes."W-whats going on?" she asks fearfully. Carson was in the Army so she knew whatever this was he has to have knowledge on. "get to Atlanta as fast as you can" the TV says before it shuts off. "Carson?" She asks realizing he was in his head. "What's going on" she'd seen zombie movies but they were fake, this was real so it couldn't possibly be zombies. 'Could it?' She asks herself "Pack our bags, get clothes, and non perishable foods... now" Carson says after snapping out of whatever trans he was in. "Wh-what", "NOW Rae, I'll explain in the car" He sternly says. Nodding Rae'Lyn doesnt complain, she does as told quickly throwing clothes and a pair of shoes into two duffle bags one his and the other one hers. She then decides to change clothes, switching her night gown for a pair of blue jean shorts and a grey tank top, sliding on her grey vans before running downstairs with both bags and an empty bag before going into the kitchen filling the empty bag with canned, and boxed foods, she'd also stuffed Debbie cakes into the duffle before pulling it into the livingroom just as Carson comes in with a smaller bag full of weapons and he's now wearing his Army uniform . "Here put this in your waistband and don't question it please and take this" He pleads holding one of his handguns to her and a machete. "o-ok" Rae stutters sticking the gun in her waistband before taking the machete he handed her. "Now we're gonna grab the bags and get in the car, when I open the door run", "Carson.." "Rae, Listen to me I know you're scared but you're gonna be okay I promise you ... but right now I need you to do what I say.... I love you" he whispers kissing her quickly before handing her two bags while grabbing two himself. Quickly they made it back to the front door "run now" Carson says yanking the front door open causing Rae'Lyn to run out the door not stopping when she see's one of her neighbors Mrs.Stalinski bent over her husband eating his insides, nor did she stop when she heard screaming coming from one of the other houses or when she saw bodies littering the street. She makes it to Carson's car quick, running faster than she ever have. Opening the passenger seat door she gets inside the car tossing the bags into the back just as Carsen hops into the drivers seat doin the same. He wastes no time starting the car a driving down the road.

They'd been in the car for a couple of hours, driving past dead bodies, driving around abandoned cars and more. They were now in traffic outside the city of Atlanta waiting to get there just as everyone else, the highway was packed with cars leading from Atlanta to god knows where. "We didn't think it'd happen here" Carson says not taking his eyes off of the dashboard. "W-what?" Rae'Lyn asks, she refused to believe they were in a fucking Zombie Apocalypse. "We got word about people getting sick and dying and then coming back to life and eating people, it was happening in other countries but we had it under control, they were supposed to send me to china next month to help control it" he whispers not daring to look at her "I didn't tell you because I didn't want to scare you, I thought it'd never make it here" he continues finally glancing over to her with tears in his eyes. She didn't blame him and she wasn't mad at him neither. "I'm scared" she admits, tears welling in her own eyes. "What's gonna happen to us? what if we d-die?" she whimpers out. She'd never been so scared in her entire life. "The cdc should have a cure... they didn't tell us me much because it isn't my mission yet... but I swear to you until the cdc gets the cure out I'll protect you I swear you'll be okay no matter what..." he says reaching over to wipe her tears. Before she could say anything else they both get caught off guard by a loud boom, looking towards where the sound came from they notice Atlanta getting bombed. "Carson" she gasps feeling her heart drop. She was gonna die, she knew it. She would never see her mother again , she'd never be able to tell Carson she loved him again, she'd never get to watch the sunset or the sunrise again. The car jerked pulling Rae'Lyn out of her head. Carson, and well as a bunch of other people pulled off of the highway driving into the woods trying to get as far away from Atlanta as possible.
