Matheo didn't even see the car in front of him until the glass from his windshield found its way into his face upon impact.
And despite the cuts that covered his whole body, the pain was unmatchable to what he felt inside.
He swerved, the clap of the other car hitting his trunk echoing into the night air on the highway, and he felt his heart skip a beat when it leaned, beginning to swerve towards the side of the road, which dipped down onto an endless hill. The car began rolling, and he was still stuck inside as it rolled down the hill, tossing him around as it did. Suddenly, he heard a smack, and everything went pitch black, leaving his mind in an empty place.
He didn't know how much time had passed, and he was only half awake as he vaguely made out the sound of sirens in the distance.
He had been on his way to the house of his girlfriend, Dahlia, when she sent him one text he had never expected to see.
The words still swam in his mind, crashing through his head like the car, which was now lying on its side, broken and destroyed.
Just like his heart.
The screen on his phone was cracked, but he could still make out the blue text bubble that gave off a luminescent glow.
I'm sorry, Matheo. We're done.
Sorry didn't make Matheo's pain cease.
It almost made him feel worse.
And all he remembered was the aching pain in his anguished heart before his head throbbed, blood trickling into his eyes before all he saw was black.
When he woke up, he was given one task:
To take somebody's life.
