Aaron Warner's Fifth Birthday

The house smells like vanilla cake and something sweeter—hope.

Aaron kneels obediently on the gleaming wooden floor, his small hands curled into trembling fists against his thighs, just the way Daddy told him to.

His heart is a frantic drumbeat in his chest, loud enough he thinks maybe Daddy can hear it.

He can't stop smiling.

He's so excited he might burst.

Daddy has another surprise.

Something special, he said.

Something just for Aaron.

Paris Anderson steps forward, slow and deliberate, boots tapping against the polished floor.

He's holding something in his hand—something long, thin, coiled like a snake. Aaron's five-year-old mind doesn't recognize it.

Doesn't see the danger.

He only sees his father, his hero, the man he loves more than anyone in the world.

Aaron beams up at him, eyes bright, cheeks flushed with excitement.

He waits.

He waits.

The first crack of the whip splits the air like thunder.

It happens so fast he doesn't even see it—only feels it—pain exploding across his back, sharp and hot, stealing the breath from his lungs.

He gasps, jerking forward, tiny hands shooting up to shield his head instinctively. His body folds in on itself, shivering, confused.

He doesn't understand.

"Daddy?" he chokes out, voice so small it barely survives the space between them. "Daddy—?"

Another lash.

This one cuts deeper.

The pain is unbearable, an electric current racing down his spine, searing through muscle and bone.

Aaron whimpers, falling onto all fours, knees scraping against the hard floor.

Tears flood his eyes, blurring the room into messy colors.

"Daddy, it hurts," he sobs, looking up with a face full of betrayal, disbelief cracking him apart. "Daddy please—stop—please—it hurts—"

Paris doesn't stop.

He doesn't even hesitate.

"You will learn not to be weak," Paris says, voice cold, unrecognizable.

The whip sings through the air again, finds his back again, and Aaron screams.

A real scream, raw and ragged and desperate.

The kind of sound no five-year-old should ever know how to make.

No one comes.

No one ever comes.

Aaron's hands claw uselessly at the floor, at the empty space around him, searching for something—someone—to save him.

There's nothing.

Only pain.

Only the whip.

Only Daddy.

His small body trembles so hard his teeth chatter. His skin burns, welted and torn, blood beginning to stain his little blue birthday shirt.

He doesn't understand what he did wrong.

He doesn't understand why Daddy doesn't love him anymore.

"I'll be good," Aaron sobs, voice shattering. "Please—Daddy—I'll be good—please—"

The words don't work.

Nothing works.

Another crack.

Another scream.

Something deep inside Aaron — something pure and soft and good — begins to tear, slow and brutal, like muscle ripping off bone.

He can feel it.

The breaking.

He buries his face into the floor, into the sharp taste of dust and blood, and lets it happen.

Lets himself be broken.

Because Daddy said he must learn.

Because Daddy said he must be better.

Because Daddy said so.

When it's finally over, Aaron doesn't move.

He lies there, tiny and wrecked, his body a battlefield of bruises and bleeding lines. His breath rattles in his chest. His hands are scraped raw.

Paris throws the whip down at his side like discarded trash.

"Get up," he says sharply, already turning away.

Aaron blinks slowly through his swollen eyelids, his body screaming in protest as he pushes himself up with shaking arms.

He doesn't ask why.

Not anymore.

He sways on his feet, dizzy and broken open, and for the first time in his life, he understands:

Love was never real.

Not here.

Not for him.

And somewhere inside the ruins of his heart, a seed of something new begins to grow.

Not hope.

Not kindness.

Something colder.

Something sharper.

Something that would one day make Paris Anderson regret ever teaching him how to survive.

Because someday, Aaron Warner would stand tall and know, with every shattered piece of himself:

"Hell is empty. And all the devils are here."
