YOU WERE jostled from your suspended sleep when you felt the ropes around your arms shift in order to accommodate the person being hung on the other side of the cross you had been strapped to for days.

You lifted your head just in time to watch as two marines disappeared from the clearing you had been forced to live in ever since you were captured. You did your best to look over your shoulder at the person hanging behind you, but all you were able to catch a glimpse of was their short green hair.

"What're you in for?..." you asked, your voice hoarse from a lack of hydration.

"Attacking marines, the usual," they replied, their gruff voice allowing you to assume who you were speaking to was a man. "You?"

"Killing marines," you answered similarly. You would've chuckled at the coincidence if you weren't so exhausted.

"You a bounty hunter?" the man wondered.

His larger stature arched slightly to show how uncomfortable he was against the wooden cross, causing his limbs to momentarily tussle with yours within the ropes.

"Not exactly," you replied, bowing your head to crack the tense muscles within your neck. "I take it you are?"

"It passes the time," he said.

"Usually it's pirates who have bounties," you responded. "What were you doing attacking marines?"

"The dickwad son of Morgan was being an ass toward a little girl," he explained. "It evolved from there. What were you doing killing marines?"

"Like I said. I don't chase bounties," you proceeded to answer. "I kill because of the deed done, not because of the number given. The most innocent person in the world can have a bounty slapped on them so long as they identify as a pirate. Most of the shit-bags in this world are right under our noses, not at sea."

"So you kill the assholes?" he assessed. "I guess that's somewhat formidable. What's your count at?"

"My what?" you questioned tiredly.

"How long have you been imprisoned?" he asked.

"I'm not imprisoned," you said. "I'm awaiting execution. Attacking and killing fall under two different categories of punishment."

"That doesn't answer my question," he stated. "How long have you been here?"

"Six days," you replied, "I think. They said they'd kill me in a week after evaluations, so don't get too attached."

"I don't get attached," he scoffed.

"One would think otherwise considering how talkative you are," you argued.

"What the hell else am I suppose to do here?" he questioned rhetorically.

You shrugged against your restraints, which were now shared with him as the marines couldn't care less about the conveniency of their prisoners.

"What's your name?" you wondered aloud.

"Zoro," he answered through a sigh, "Zoro Roronoa."

"[Y/N]," you introduced yourself even though it would mean nothing in another day, "[Y/N] [L/N]. Can I give you a word of advice, Zoro?"

"Hm?" he hummed.

"You better hope you can find a way out of here before those doors open again," you stated, "because, once you're in these ropes, you either stay in them, or you die."
